When I say the "CC" option is "greyed-out," I mean that you can see it but it is grey in color and not accessible like the other options, which make it (CC) impossilbe (in its current state) to access.

The instructions you gave would work if it (CC) were not greyed out. The arrow keys just pass over the greyed-out option when you try to scroll in that menu catigory. The other (other than CC) options in that menu area work fine, but their listing is dark in color.

  • jlfinkels Nov 25, 2007

I'm having the exact same problem. By "greyed out" it means you cannot select "Caption" on the "Option" screen. The "cc" button on the remote (under slider) does not work either. It's a poser.

  • Immadashell Nov 30, 2007

I have the same problem. It only started after I got a new HD cable box installed. The posted solution is no help. The menu items are greyed. In other words you cannot access them with the remote. They are simply not available. So I have a new LG tv that my hearing impaired wife cannot watch. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Anonymous Dec 21, 2007

Yup. Its greyed out so there IS no selection to be made. scrolls right past it.

  • LizNoCapOp Dec 25, 2007

I'm also having the same problem - just scrolls right past the "greyed out" Caption Option - has anyone figured out how to fix this yet? The online manual shows all the options that can "supposedly" be accessed with the Caption Option (font size etc.) - but this is of no help since it's greyed out and can't be chosen. Any help or ideas much appreciated.

our new LG LCD Tv started up with the closed captioning on it as soo as it was hooked up The caption under the options list is greyed put also. My husband is hard of hearing and loves it on, but I hate it and when he's not watching TV I usually turn it off(on my old TV. We have comcast cable with the HD setup. Also when changing the channels the sound shuts off. We have to shut the TV off and turn it back on to get the sound back on. My husband got the TV from HSN, Beautiful picture, but sure think it's way too expensive for all those problems mentioned above. It is the 52" screen

Same problem here, too. I guess people with hearing disabilities weren't considered here. Frustrating!
Will a coax cable setup fix the problem? I have DISH satellite and an analog box. The picture is poor as it is, with no captions, my deaf daughter can't enjoy it either.

I have the same problem, Comcast DVR box has no option to enable CC that I can find.

I saw it when I set the TV up at work with an antenna, so I am leaning towards agreeing with the people who say it doesn't function with the HDMI inputs...

The "Screen" option is also greyed out on my LG 42LB5D. On dark
shots, when someone is standing outside at night, the dark areas are
purplish, and i cant seem to fix it. I wanted to go into the
"screen" option because there is a "phase" setting, and i wanted to
    try adjusting it.

Anyone have ideas about how to fix the 'purplish' halo on dark shots, and/or get into the "Screen" setting?

    Thanks much!

With the LG hand remote choose the Qmenu to turn closed caption "on". Pull out of there and then on the LG remoote hit the home menu, choose option, enter then follow Williams Rayburn's instructions below. You dont have to use the closed caption on the cable box. plus the cc on the tv is a lot nicer.

  • Anonymous Feb 03, 2013

So after reading all these solutions, it is aparent that there is actually no solution. If one does not use the coaxial cable for their TV input captioning is not available from the TV. Further if one has a crappy cable company such as Comcast captioning is not available from the cable box. Shouldn't technology actually move in the other direction, as in forward?

Well I stumbled onto the solution to my problem, finally, but no thanks to any of the tech at my cable company who provided me with my cable box or with the mfg of my LG LCD TV (Model # 42LB5D). I am amazed that these tech don't know this stuff since it is such a big issue (to some people). Anyway, here it is. I'll also post this under a new and more clear caption for anyone else who might have this problem.

My HD Cable service provider is Charter.
My TV is a LG LCT 42" (Model # 42LB5D).
My cable box is a Motorola DCH 6416.

Solution to getting closed caption is to turn the tv on, the cable box off (it must be off). On the front of the cable box press the menu button (again box must be off!), and this will bring up the "user setting options) and among many is the closed caption option. My CC was set to off. I turned it on and now all is well. Also, there are other option available listed there to fine tune the HD reception.

I hope this is clear and of help to someone out there. It breaks my heart to read on Google all of the problems the hearing impared are having with this issue. The solution is simple once you find it . . . Isn't that the way it always is. It is just too bad that when you go to the tech support who should be on top to this stuff they don't have a clue.

  • SeptembersOw Jun 19, 2011

This Might not work for some people as it didn't work for me, I have come up with an alternate solution for this problem. First off you have to change your INPUT setting to TV. That is where a lot of people are having trouble with. From there you can go back to OPTION and turn CAPTION On or to CC1. Then change the input back to COMPONENT 2 or 1. From There Turn OFF the Cable Box and Press the menu button(The Cable Box MUST be TURNED OFF!!!) This will bring up the user setting option, Scroll down and Change Closed Caption to enabled, also there are other options available listed to fine tune the HD Reception. Turn The Cable Box On Once Again and the Caption should work perfectly fine.I Hoped This cleared up some of the problems that you guys have been experiencing.

  • Anonymous Jan 07, 2017

2017.01.07: After spending 45 minutes with our cable carrier trying to resolve a similar issue (turning off the closed caption) this method worked like a charm.
Like all computers depending on what mode you are in will bring up different screens. Hitting the menu button on the controller with the cable off (and TV on) brought up a screen that looked like a programming screen under windows. Just had to scroll down and turn off the closed caption! After that just powered down the cable box and all is well again!
    THANKS!!!!!!!!

I have spoken to LG tech support on this issue, and couldn't believe what they told me.

It would appear that the captioning option only works through their tuner, accessed only though the co-ax connection. In other words, if you're connected by component or HDMI cables then this option will disappear. They also told me that I can't run HD or component cables in parallel with the co-ax cable, as the HDMI is designed to supercede everything else when plugged in. I was informed that captioning should still work through my satellite/cable box or through my VCR. My cable box works with captioning on some shows but not others, even where captioning is supposed to be available, and it doesn't work on 90% of my movies through my DVD player, even where captions are available..

All my other non LG tvs will allow closed caption. Unfortunately , the LG is my main tv. Yes, you can get CC through your cable box where programming allows, but you CAN'T get CC for your DVDS even when it's available.;(

it all boils down to a part made in China that people overlooked when engineering the tvs....probably a 50 cent piece when they are hearing impaired they will remembernge

Ok, as an ex LG Tech Support guy, this is what happens: ONLY the broadcast OTA signal will carry Colosed Caption etc as a separate component. Cable/Satellite providers may or may not embed that into the picture, if this is the case the CC is controlled by the sat/cable STB not the TV. There are moves afoot to ensure that Sat/Cable companies do embed this signal.

So i guess you really can't change it through the TV set itself... However, if you have a cable provider, try changing the CC through the settings menu on the cable box..

Good luck.

Assuming you have done the following:

Press the MENU button and then use arrow-up / arrow-down button to select the
OPTION menu.
Press the arrow-forward button and then use arrow-up / arrow-down button to select Caption/Text.
Press the arrow-forward button and then use arrow-up / arrow-down button to select caption: CC1,
CC2, CC3, CC4, Text1, Text2, Text3, or Text4.
CAPTION
The term for the words that scroll across the bottom of the TV screen;
usually the audio portion of the program provided for the hearing
impaired.
TEXT
The term for the words that appear in a large black frame and almost
cover the entire screen; usually messages provided by the broadcaster.
Press EXIT button to return to TV viewing or press MENU button to
return to the previous menu.

Then what is "greyed-out"? Do the arrow keys allow you into the test area when you press the arrow-forward?

Let see, go to Option Menu.. There you should have three sub menus pretaining to caption, "Caption", "Caption Text" and "Caption Option". First select "Caption" and make sure that it's set to "On". Then back out of that sub menu and select "Caption Text" and set it at "CC1" You probably won't have a "Caption Option", from the "Options" menu, until you've selected "Caption" to be on. Let me know how that works. Also, do you have the Owner's Manual? If not give me your address and I'll send yo a Pando link to download it..

You need to have digital based cable to enable the option section. Then you can adjust varies of font styles, font colors, etc.

The problem I experienced so many cable companies were not interesting to support closed captioning. Secondly, TV manfacturers are doing to get rid of closed captioning features. I.E. HDMI and Component connections were incompatible with CC therefore CC users stuck with primitive technology by use either 75-ohm or composite (RGB) with reduce resolution as much as like standard TV.

FCC knows about it and they still continue nothing to make a tough action against manfacturers and cable companies. They just slap the hands.

It may good time to have nationwide protest and do not buy any new generation of TV then manfacturers will react this and put more compatible with higher resolution with CC features.

  • gdon1 Mar 16, 2011

Lack of closed captioning is insulting the deaf community. Yes, they may have special convertors at home but not when the visit their friends.

We have DISH so when we switched to the HD version of the DISH DVR we found a CLOSED CAPTION option available there and are using it now. Love the picture on the LG Plasma, but providing a HDMI connection WITHOUT CLOSED CAPTION is beyond stupid. Hope this work around helps.

Yes, you can get some closed caption through your cable box with a LG 42" as stated here. What you can't always get is cc on some dvd's due to the gray-out of the cc function through the tv. It's grayed out due to the hdmi cable on this particular brand and model. My vizio tv works fine, through the tv and through the cable box. So, don't buy LG tv's. Too late for me unfortunately. .....

I have Verizon for my cable provider and I own a LG 32" tv. On your TV remote prress the MENU BUTTON then go to the SETTINGS button, then go to Accessability then Closed Captions. Press Okay then choose CC1 and then you are good to go. To remove it follow the same steps and then choose off and hit okay. I hope that helps

Just got off the phone with telus. Problem fixed now. CC does not use the TV's CC. So we did a <OPTIONS> <CC> "ON" then <MENU> <SETTINGS> <TELEVISION> <CLOSED CAPTIONS> ON, Closed Caption 1 for Digital , Closed caption 1 for Standard

& all works fine now. My Closed captioning standard was set at 2. Also he mentioned that some of the APPS like TED TV will turn CC off but not back on.

Hope this helps.

None of these solutions are optimal. The captions generated on my Comcast HD settop box are of poor quality. Often, entire lines of text are not displayed.

Also, captions are just not displayed on several of the on Demand programs because the HD set top box can't seem to decode them.

I've complained to the FCC about these issues and would suggest that others do the same to get more vsibility and action on these issues. The link is https://esupport.fcc.gov/sform2000/formC!input.action?form_page=2000C

Good luck

I have LG TV, Roku stick, Sling, Amazon Prime.
when in Sling, I can not change the CC settings. However, if I pull up a movie in Amazon Prime, I CAN change it with just my ROKU stick.
So...
If I'm in Sling without captions, and I want to turn on captions, I go into Prime, pull up a movie, turn on my captions. Then go back to Sling.
Crazy to have to do that.
but it works

LG customer service informed me I had to have cable for the closed captioning to work. 1) Cable is not offered where I live 2) It is not economically feasible for me to purchase television. 3) I live too far away from a metro area to receive a signal from an antenna, even if I had one. This is ridiculous. Some DVD CC's can only be accessed by the TV. I complained to the FCC. I hope more people will do the same. However, I suspect DVDs will not be covered. Though my Sony DVD player has the CC option and it works. Mmm?!

I have the LGHD TV 32" and the Closed Caption options are grayed out. My COX CABLE menu allows me to set captions ON for TV and OLDER DVD's. But NOT the latest generation DVD's. It seems the trouble is something that can only be brought before the FCC who can force these companies to STOP eliminating CC options for those of us who would like to READ the words that 75% of the MUMBING actors say out there. It's absurd this has become a political issue for the greedy once again. FIX IT!

I've had the same problem watching programs on Time Warner Cable at friends' house (one has a Samsung, the other a LG). Had more time to play around with the LG, and figured out the solution that xberrios suggested.

What premtech suggests works on old Sony CRT TVs, like the one that my dad has. This is why I prefer Sonys over Panasonics, Samsungs and LGs. I'm stubborn that way, but I gotta have my CC! (Except live shows, e.g., sporting events, news and award shows.)

I don't have an LG set but began to wonder if other TVs have similar problems. The Vizio forums had same questions, but there was a link to an article from CED Magazine that explained the problem as both, a limitation of the HDMI interface and the And the inability of the Set Top Box, (provided by some Cable or Sat. providers) to decode the signal. The article gets pretty techno heavy at first but scroll down about half way and he explains the HDMI question quite well. The link to the article is:

Just got off the phone with telus. Problem fixed now. CC does not use the TV's CC. So we did a "ON" then ON, Closed Caption 1 for Digital , Closed caption 1 for Standard & all works fine now. My Closed captioning standard was set at 2. Also he mentioned that some of the APPS like TED TV will turn CC off but not back on. Hope this helps.

I have this LG 42" TV and using Telus TV.

I had the same issue that the CC was grayed out from the LG TV's menu. The issue was resolved by the following steps:

1) Go to Telus TV setting;
2) Enable Closed Caption there

Done.

SOURCE: above pretty much says it.

If the closed caption is shaded out in the menu, this usually means closed caption is not an option. Closed caption can not be turned on if the TV is on component, RGB, DVI, Or HDMI inputs. The closed caption will need to be turned on by using the set-top box or other device that is connected to TV inputs. or if the tv is connected directly to the cable line or anteanna

Testimonial: "Thankx a lot. I contacted my cable company and they turned on the CC for me."

Hello
Closed Caption function is set to On in your JVC. look if there any button marked as "CC" on its remote control. If it is there, hit it till the closed caption function go off from your tv screen. If there is no such button found, get into its menu option, surf through, and get in to the closed caption option, set the close caption function OFF in that window. OK.

I haven't been able to put closed captioning on tv. I don't understand how and what code to use to get the closed captioning to work.

Enable Caption Using the Original Remote
  1. Press the [CCD] button to change the CCD mode.
  2. Using this button will set the Closed Caption mode when viewing a DTV or TV channel.
Enable Caption Using the TV Menu
  1. Open the Menu screen, select the third icon, in the middle, this is the Setup Menu.
  2. In the Setup Menu, choose the Caption option.
  3. Caption: There are three items in it - Analog Closed Caption, Digital Closed Caption and Digital Caption Style
  • Analog Closed Caption: CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, TEXT1,TEXT2, TEXT3, TEXT4.
  • Digital Closed Caption: Service1, Service2, Service3, Service4, Service5, Service6.
  • Digital Caption Style: There are two Caption Styles. One is the automatic function set as the broadcaster, while the other is the custom style where you can adjust the font size, color, opacity, background color etc., accordingly.

Model: LG 42LC7D Closed caption/text option is "greyed" out and I am unable to use this option. How do I fix this?

If your using the RGB inputs or A/V inputs I do believe that feature is disabled. You have to use the closed caption capabilities with the cable box or satellite from with-in them, which ever you may have. The CC is only active in the menu when cable is directly connected to the RF jack for input on the TV, which can be the cable box also. Hope this helped.

Closed captions will not disappear

Some TV will not display close caption in HD mode. This is why its Grey out in HD mode. If you switch to regular input, i can bet you your close caption will not be Grey out. The problem you are having is your cable box has close caption enable. You must go into the cable box menu and turn caption off. In some box you may have to call your cable provide for assistant.
