I started to heat a cup of coffee, it momentarily interrupted power to the kitchen, fluorescent lamps went out, then slowly came back on. I waited a few minutes and tried again with no problems, coffee heated fine. Several hours later I tried to heat something else and the MW interrupted power again, lights out, then slow recovery. In neither case did the microwave blow a fuse nor did the kitchen circuit breaker trip. In each case I think there was a loud snap noise but I'm not certain because of the surprise. Is this unit likely to be repairable or will it need replacing? It was mfg in 1999, has been in use for 15 years. I'm not trying any thing until I get your reply and probably calling a repair man.
Because of the loud snap you are hearing, my guess is you have something shorting out in the high voltage section of the microwave. I'm surprised it is not blowing the internal microwave fuse yet. Average repair cost depending of what part it going bad is approximately $150 to $200. Considering the age of your micro my suggestion is put the money towards a new one.
