We had a electric wipeout and since then I can receive or send faxes. My printer works and I can scan, but something isn't connecting to make me be able to fax. I have a separate phone number for my fax. Should I call the phone company?
The only reason to call the phone company is if you're not getting a dial tone on that line. Otherwise, have you shut down the printer and tried to reset it to factory defaults. To do that, follow the instructions below:

There are 2 ports on the rear, 1 for the incomming phone line, and one to plug in a telephone handset (passthrough) if the telephone line is plugged into the wrong port, the fax machine is unable to dial properly, So try plugging into the other port on the back, it's just next to the other port hope this helps

They're telling you your hardward doesn't play nice with their hardware. A few suggestions:
Update your printer, and see if any improvement is found:

If that doesn't work, see if your computer has a fax modem that itself can be updated and can support the hardware. Your multifunction printer has a scanner; you can scan in the things you want to fax, then fax from the computer if the computer can fax. This is starting to look like a Dr. Seuss book.
You can also try to learn more about what the problems are and look elsewhere. Your "digital" phone is actually voice over Internet, something VOIP. If you Google for VOIP FAX you'll find some information, like this:

If a phone extension is attached to your printer, and when someone is trying to send a fax to you.....just answer the phone. then on the printer press the Black button to start receiving documents in black printing or press the Color button to start receiving documents in colored printing.
If your are not using a phone, just press the Black or Color button when you hear the printer is ringing.

I was searching for an answer to this to make sure my new MX870 is correctly set to receive faxes. Here's one answer I came across:
First set Tel-Priority, turn off incoming ring, turn on manual/auto switch, then check how many seconds it takes for your answering machine to come on, and set it a couple of seconds after that. This should do the trick.
