Receiver won't put out sound to LCD Sharp aquos

I've connected my 803 to my sharp LCD via HDMI, and my comcast hd cable box and my dvd player to the 803 receiver via HDMI; but i can't hear any sound on TV? I have not yet connected my surround speakers... the message keeps stating that the "...input device is not proper..." Please help.

I agree with you that this (pcm vs. dolby) is a problem, but my comcast cable box does not have pcm selection, it only has hdmi, dolby and other...additionally, sharp aquos lcd has pcm setting and it is still a problem. One remedy i discovered, is that I simply connected the hdmi cable directly to the tv, bypassing the receiver and the tv has no problem with hdmi carrying audio for the hd channels in dolby/hdmi. And I have connected my dvd player to receiver and then receiver to tv via hdmi so i get my surround just fine that way...

my concern was i did not want to have to watch TV (cable) in my surround...and so the original set up where cable box and dvd player went to receiver then one single cable Hdmi went to tv was not allowing me to hear hd channels thru tv speakers, i could always hear non-hd channels via hdmi cable connection just fine thru those same tv speakers.

I hope this makes sense. Thank you for your assistance.

I have the same problem with my Sharp Lcd and Onkyo 804. I believe one problem is that the TV can not accept dolby digital or dts digital audio signals through HDMI. It will play sound if it receives a PCM signal through HDMI. You can try switching the type of signal on the cable box settings and on the dvd player. I switched to PCM and got sound through the TV and the receiver. The problem is that PCM is usually only a 2 channel signal and Dolby 5.1 will sound better through the surround sound theater system. I have not found an absolute solution to this yet, but I am willing to not get sound through the lousy TV speakers in order to get top notch sound through the Onkyo.

No video from AV1 channel connected to a Toshiba DVD player via Component to Sharp Aquos TV via HDMI. Audio is fine via Optical cable.

Usually you cannot mix and match sources and outputs. In other words, if you're using component to connect from DVD player to a receiver, you have to also use component to connect from receiver to TV. Input and output MUST be the same - both HDMI or both Component.

How do I connect to Sharp HDTV and Comcast cable

Your dvd recorder only has rca, red white yellow inputs it wont allow you to record in HD, although you can play your comcast box any hd, regular digital through and record. Hook up the comcast box if HD through preferably HDMI if not get one from comcast. The HD box is the only box that allow HDMI, component and regular RCA and some RF out. This way you can play HD to your set but also record through RCA or RF again will not allow for HD record unless its TiVo. Hope this helps

Sharp Aquos 46" HDMI problem

I have a similar problem. The Sharp TV aquos appears to be shutting down my blue ray player and dvd recorder when connected via HDMI. They work fine and never close down when I connect them via the rca cables either single video connection or a composite 3 cable rca lead. I have 3 HDMI inputs on the tv and the problem occurs on all 3. Any suggestions?

Close captioning on HDMI

The TV will not display closed caption with HDMI input. It must either over-the-air (antenna) or composite input for the TV to manage CC.

To get CC with HDMI from your Comcast DVR, you need to configure the cable box. Instructions can be found here:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Setup

If you want CC all of the time, this works well. But since you must power-off the cable box to change the setting, switching CC on and off is a real pain.

Your set-up is similar to mine (Sharp Aquos 46" and Comcast DVR). I have the composite output from the cable box going to a DVD-recorder and on to the TV. Whenever I need CC (usually to catch some mumbled dialog), I just rewind the DVR, and switch the TV input to the composite input. Then I switch back to HDMI to continue watching in HD.

42" Sharp Aquous audio; Mono vs. Stereo

no. that is not true. the person you spoke to obviously didn't know what they were talking about. you mean to tell me that everyone that has a cable or satellite box with a stereo or hd tv is not going to receive stereo sound? really, think about it. you only need a cable box( for now ) if you have premium channels (hbo, showtime etc). you can connect the cable line right into the tv if you only have basic cable. look at the back of your cable box. if you have a red, white, & yellow audio/video output, then the box is stereo.connect these outputs to your tv. this connection however is not hd.you will need a hd box with a hdmi cable for hd .To put the tv on stereo mode, there should be a way via the menu and/or the audio button on the remote to get it off mono and put it on stereo. your manual should at least show you around the settings of your tv.

LCDTV - Picture problem

Do the lines only appear on the Cable box input? It maybe be a problem with your cable. Try to isolate the problem.

Do you see the lines on all sources such as your DVD player as well? If you press the MENU button on the Sharp remote, do the lines go through the menu as well? If yes, it is most likely a TV problem.

A bunch of lines sounds like it is most likely a problem with the connection with the LVDS cable, if not that, then a defective main board.

There isn't really much you can do about it now.
Since the TV is less than a year old, I suggest calling Sharp to locate a local authorized service center.

Turn off closed caption on input(component) on Sharp Aquos 42"

I have a Sharp Aquos 46" and go a Comcast HD receiver as well, and had the same problem turning off the Closed Captioning. I order to turn it off you need to go into the box user setting by (starting w/ the cable box and tv on) pressing the power button for the cable box then the menu button for the cable box. This will open up the user settings menu. Just toggle CLOSED CAPTION to DISABLED.
