The machine and module version number must match or the machine will not detect that a module is attached. So the question is how can you find out what firmware version number your machine and module is.
Since it is easier to show people how to do this, I have a video posted on YouTube.com that instructs you on how to see what version your machine and module is. To do this you must have the module attached and plugged into your 180.
Go to www.youtube.com and type this in the search box at the top of the page "Bernina check hours 165, 170, 180, 185"
I know the title says check hours, but the video shows you how to put your machine on the service mode so you can see how many hours are on the machine. I also then show how to check the firmware version number. It's the first part of the version number before the "." that must be the same. Like if your machine is v4.01 and the module is 4.04, they are both version 4 so they will be able to communicate with each other. If your machine is v4.04 and the module is v3.01 then you have a version 4 machine and a version 3 module and the machine will not detect that a module is attached.
The problem can be corrected at a Bernina dealer that will be willing to help you out. It only takes a simple connection to a computer, the correct dealer software and a dealer can match the firmware versions for you. Hopefully you can find one that is willing to help.
I have followed your advise and the module is not showing! there was only 1 hour on the machine and the module looks brand new too. I am thinking that the lady who sold me the machine has not used it. I have spoken to bernina and two dealers no one is bieng helpful only you!! I am not giving up yet because its cost me alot already, I should of bought a new machine or just got your advise first. Been using bernina machines for 18y now this has put me off a bit. Do you recomend any other brands for machine embroidery? If i have no luck with this will maybe look in to a brother? Thanks for all your help Regards Susan Alexander
Hi Susan,
Hi Susan, It took me a while to figure out how to answer you on this site. Did you contact me before about this problem through YouTube? If not someone else did that had/has the same problem. Their attempts to get a dealer to help them did not work out well as the dealer kept trying to sell them a new Bernina rather than helping with the problem. When you looked at the machines firmware version, what version number did it show?
Sorry I keep hitting my return button on my keypad to drop down a space and that posts what I have written so far. How about emailing me at [email protected] so I can do a better job replying. Possibly there is a problem with the module. Your lowest cost option should you not have a dealer willing to help, is to send me your module so I can test it out. I can also change the firmware version of your module should I find that it works. If it does not I can then find out what it would cost to replace the circuit board inside of the module. This would definetly be way less than another machine.

Sometimes it can be as simple as shutting of the machine and unplugging it for say an hour, and then re-initiating what you need. I would check to make sure your machine is executing stitches first, just in case it is something in the machine.
Then check connections/contacts, and if they are inside the machine and you don't have a tech that knows, they can carefully pack your machine and send it to Chicago to have it fixed. Make sure you write your name on detachable parts (including box) with indelible ink (which can typically be removed later with rubbing alcohol).
I have a feeling it is something simple. Take a break, disconnect all (and yourself) and go back later or next day to try again.

With the machine off, hold down the 'CLR' button and turn on the machine still holding down the button. On the lower right hand side of the screen that will appear is a clock symbol, next to it is the number of hours on the machine since the last service.

Refer to your manual for maintenance and clean the machine as indicated. A sensor may be blocked by lint.
If this continues, the machine will need to be serviced by an authorized Bernina repair tech.

For other versions and probably yours...
You'll need the following service packs to use BERNINA Embroidery Software V5 aand under Windows® 7 / Windows Vista™ operating system:
You'll find them at www.bernina.com\downloads
Hope this helped.

You will need to update the software in the machine, to a min of version 3.08 this can be done at BERNINA dealer (usually free of charge) once this is complete you designer will fully be compatible. WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR MACHINE IN TO BE UPDATE DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE THE EMBROIDERY UNIT IN AS WELL AS IT CONTAINS ITS OWN SOFTWARE
SOURCE: how do you upgrade the Bernina Artista motherboard
You do not need to changes any board. The machine carries software and so does the embroidery unit, in order for the to read each other the s.machine and e.unit must have same software. Just take you machine and embroidery unit into your local bernina dealer and have you dealer download version 4.01 to you machine and e unit. then all will work just find. usually the dealer will do the download for free!!!!!!!!!!
