The voicemail is on the computer at your carrier's office, not on your phone. Call ATT or Verizon (or whoever your carrier is) and ask them to reset your password - then log in, listen to voicemails and change your message from there. If the phone is old and no longer connected to a carrier, the messages are lost unless your new phone uses the same carrier (you should be able to log in with your new phone and listen to old messages if you did not delete them yet - even if they came in when you owned this old phone.
I would also suggest downloading the manual. I have my answering service thru att and I call a phone # assigned to me to check messages at any time.

It's not in the manual for the good reason that the AT&T 992 isn't an answering machine. If you want to record an outgoing voicemail greeting, you'll have to do it on the voicemail system, not on the phone.
The AT&T 992 isn't an answering machine. If you want to know how to record an outgoing voicemail greeting, you'll have to tell us the make and model of the voicemail system.
You apparently have unheard messages on the voicemail system provided by your telephone company. This system records messages when someone calls while you're already on the phone. Please contact your telephone company for instructions on accessing their voicemail system.
You can try reset your phone,
Turn
off the phone, remove the AC adapter, press and hold the page/call
button that is on the phone and plug back your Ac adapter, see if this fix the problem.
If you're talking about the voicemail system provided by your local telephone company, each will be different, but my ATT UVerse voicemail is controlled at http://www.att.com/uversecentral and then click My Account, My Services, U-verse Voice Home Page. Hopefully ATT doesn't shuffle around the menus by the time you read this. This is correct as of Dec 2010.
