The C340 works with MMC and SD cards. Your 16GB card is a SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use a MMC or SD card, which top out at 2GB.
Your camera was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, your camera can only use standard SD cards, those usually 2GB or less. An SDHC card will not be recognized properly by your camera. If you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for SD and "non hc", with the non hc in quotes. Believe that Transcend makes one.

A Tip: If you use a card reader, you will need a SDHC card reader if you use a SDHC card. Most older card readers can not read a SDHC card.
Tip number 2: Always format a new card with the Camera before taking any pictures. You will find how to format with the camera in the camera User Manual.

But try an firmware upgrade.
