I have an Emachines ET1161-07 which freezes at the E logo. the only way to even reach the BIOs is to remove and replace the CMOS battery; doing this only works once and then the computer freez

Reseated drives, RAM, replaced CMOS battery, put in new video card.

This might be a dodgy stick of memory or memory slot. If you have more than 1 stick of memory, see what happens if you just use variations of just 1. Maybe try disonnecting all drives except the one you boot from. And, not sure exactly what you mean by works once and how far it gets after removing the CMOS battery. But does it get far enough to boot from a cd? If it does, try getting hold of a AVG rescue disk this will run a pre-boot virus check which may clear the problem if you're lucky. Obviously you would have to use a friend's machine to burn the disk. Unlikely, but could be a failing powers supply. Borrow one and try it instead. Otherwise, it really sounds like a terminal motherboard issue to me. Godd luck.

Testimonial: "Hello Ray, Let me see if I can describe it better: Turn on - stuck on E, Remove CMOS, Get E and into Bios, reboot, stuck on E. I never get past the E except just after removing the battery and into the Bios. I've removed all RAM, MB responds, One chip at a time - nothing. I'll try your troubleshooting advice again but I'm starting suspect a terminal MB issue as well."

Password for bios

It depends where the machine came from. It may have been put on by the shop that sold it, or a previous owner.

Sadly, I cannot find an online manual for this motherboard (it should be a MCP61PM-GM motherboard), which would lead to how to reset the BIOS. Have a look around the motherboad closely, and see if you can find a switch, or even remove the power and the battery for at least 24 hours.

This is some info I found that may help you:
"Using the Motherboard "Clear CMOS" Jumper or Dipswitch settings Many motherboards feature a set of jumpers or dipswitches that will clear the CMOS and wipe all of the custom settings including BIOS passwords. The locations of these jumpers / dipswitches will vary depending on the motherboard manufacturer and ideally you should always refer to the motherboard or computer manufacturers documentation. If the documentation is unavailable, the jumpers/dipswitches can sometimes be found along the edge of the motherboard, next to the CMOS battery, or near the processor. Some manufacturers may label the jumper / dipswitch CLEAR - CLEAR CMOS - CLR - CLRPWD - PASSWD - PASSWORD - PWD. On laptop computers, the dipswitches are usually found under the keyboard or within a compartment at the bottom of the laptop.
Please remember to unplug your PC and use a grounding strip before reaching into your PC and touching the motherboard. Once you locate and rest the jumper switches, turn the computer on and check if the password has been cleared. If it has, turn the computer off and return the jumpers or dipswitches to its original position.
Removing the CMOS Battery The CMOS settings on most systems are buffered by a small battery that is attached to the motherboard. (It looks like a small watch battery). If you unplug the PC and remove the battery for 10-15 minutes, the CMOS may reset itself and the password should be blank. (Along with any other machine specific settings, so be sure you are familiar with manually reconfiguring the BIOS settings before you do this.) Some manufacturers backup the power to the CMOS chipset by using a capacitor, so if your first attempt fails, leave the battery out (with the system unplugged) for at least 24 hours. Some batteries are actually soldered onto the motherboard making this task more difficult. Unsoldering the battery incorrectly may damage your motherboard and other components, so please don't attempt this if you are inexperienced. Another option may be to remove the CMOS chip from the motherboard for a period of time.
Note: Removing the battery to reset the CMOS will not work for all PC's, and almost all of the newer laptops store their BIOS passwords in a manner which does not require continuous power, so removing the CMOS battery may not work at all. IBM Thinkpad laptops lock the hard drive as well as the BIOS when the supervisor password is set. If you reset the BIOS password, but cannot reset the hard drive password, you may not be able to access the drive and it will remain locked, even if you place it in a new laptop. IBM Thinkpads have special jumper switches on the motherboard, and these should be used to reset the system."

When power on sometimes no display nothing. remove all cables and cmos battery nothing . other day power on normal and no present problem long time.

1) Try Replacing your RAM and clean the components inside computer with a blower, don't use brush or cloth to clean.
2) Change your CMOS battery.
3) If the problem sill occurs then your VGA Chipset might be damaged. Try installing a graphics card if the VGA chipset is damaged.
4) Replace the BIOS (Some BIOS can be replaced).

Aloha, replaced cmos battery (assumed dead) because emachine hangs on E logo screen and neither option to press F2 (bios settings) or F10 (boot menu) do anything. Tried putting in Recovery media back up...

First of all you should always follow anti-static procedures before doing anything inside a PC. Unplug the power, earth yourself on a door handle, radiator or some metal or even touch the chasis of the PC to earth yourself, then you can start.
Remove the cmos battery again and some where near the battery is the cmos reset jumper, you need to move this jumper to reset cmos and leave it for 10 seconds. Move the jumper back to the previous position and reinsert the battery and all should be well.
Good luck

Needs factory reset or master reboot

Hi,

your question is very basic.
if you need to master reset the system to it,s bios default settings.
remove the power, remove the left hand side panel. locate the cmos battery.
remove the battery for 10 seconds, then replace it. replace power lead and reboot.
if you get a message stating cmos settings incorrect, enter bios setup. change time/date settings.
save and exit. Problem Solved.

Bios

Hi, if you're system does not keep the correct date & time it is possible the cmos/bios battery on the motherboard has reached it's max life span. The bios battery recharges only when the system is on. In many cases even when the system is on & you correct the date & time & notice the time is off the battery needs replaced.
