I have tried hooking it up to my new computer via a USB drive and synching it. Nothing happened. Some of my songs mysteriously disappeared into thin air.
Before you connect the iPod, you should install iTunes. The program is free and can be downloaded form the Apple support page. After installing, you better first setup your account. The same name you used to buy the music in the first place. Then connect the iPod to the computer and wait till iTunes starts and shows you the iPod.
Perhaps you have to authorise the PC with the account. You can have up to 5 authorised PC's with one account.
Here you find the software for your computer:
Apple iTunes Download iTunes Now
Only songs you bought in the app store, will be synced again and again to your iPod, as long as you have the same account. Music you added from a CD or MP3 files from your computer, only will be synced as long as they stay in the same folder. So now you have a new computer, you again have to add the songs you did not buy in the Apple store. Sorry it works that way.

Install iTunes on your new computer, then re-download or transfer purchases on iTunes. This official guide may help you. http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201267 If you have non-purchased music on your iPod, feel free to read this article.
How to Transfer Music from iPod to Computer
To Transferring Playlists If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop. Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing. I already have i-tunes. I installed it as soon as I got my new computer. What's wrong is that some of my songs have disappeared even though I put all my back-up music discs in. I'm confused.
