Most likely you will need a scan converter to change your signal from a Video to a VGA. The signals are mismatched.

What do L & R mean on the onscreen display?

The Left and Right Hi-Fi audio channels. It's saying it's detected hi-fi sound on the video tape if one is playing or it will record in hi-fi sound. If they go away then you are probably watching an old tape before hi-fi sound came in. Though they will also go if the main head is dirty. As the hi-fi sound pick up heads are on that.

I need instruction to set recording for sharp h952 vcr

You need remote to get menu to set the clock then go to timed recording setting. Then you load a new tape, then shut down the vcr and wait for the timer to start the vcr and recording for you.

If you need a manual, google for sharp vcr manual download free from sharp website.
