How to Jailbreak your iPod with redsn0w.
Regarding the legality of jailbreaking: It has been ruled by law that jailbreaking is, in fact, legal, despite what some say. However, there are things that you can do with jailbreaking that are illegal, none of which is discussed here. Everything that you are instructed to do here is perfectly legal. Even downloading Installous is legal, but pirating paid apps from it is illegal. Use at your own risk.
That said, let's get on with the jailbreaking! Jailbreaking with redsn0w is easy. The first thing you will want to is check to make sure you have iOS 4.3.1. Also note that this will not work with Verizon's iPhone. To check your current version, get out your iPod or iPhone and go to settings. Once there, go to general and then press about. It should list your version there. If you don't have 4.3.1, you can get it by plugging your iPhone or iPod into iTunes and update it from the pop-up window that will appear.
Once you're sure that your iOS version is 4.3.1, which is the latest as of April 9th, 2011, we can begin. The first step is to download Redsn0w, the tool we will be using.
For Windows: Download from this link. Once you download Redsn0w, you need to right click on it and select properties. Go to the compatibility tab and check
Run as administrator and
Run in compatibility mode for Windows XP.For Mac: Download from this link. Now we're ready to start the process of jailbreaking your iPod / iPhone with redsn0w.
Step 1) Plug your iPhone or iPod Touch into your computer. Make sure iTunes is closed and that your iPhone or iPod is off.
Step 2) Download and select your device's IPSW. To do that, go to
this page and click the link for your device. The download may take a little while. Once your download is done, open Redsn0w and press the browse button. Browse to the IPSW file you just downloaded and open it.
Step 3) Press next and wait for Redsn0w to process the data. Once it's done you will see a screen asking which options you want. Make sure
Install Cydia is the
only one checked. Press next.
Step 4) You will see a screen that tells you to make sure your iPhone/iPod is off. Pick up your device in your hands and be ready to follow the on-screen instructions. When you are ready, press next.
Step 5) Follow the on-screen instructions, telling you to hold the power button and home button and whatnot. Once it automatically skips to the next screen, you should release the buttons you are holding and wait for the jailbreak to continue. Once it asks you to press finish, do so but leave your iPhone or iPod plugged in.
Step 6) Wait for your iPhone or iPod to finish its process. Do not be alarmed if white lines of text appear, or if a walking pineapple appears.
Once your iPhone or iPod is back at the lock screen, your jailbreak is done! Cydia, your jailbroken app store, should be found as the last app on your last page. Have fun, and play safe.
