Sound like the whole unit needs a good cleaning. My rule is "if it moves give it a lube", be careful not to get oil on electric boards or in the motor. What is the make and model of your machine. I will try to help you more.
The needle on my sewing machine won't move. The pedal makes a noise but nothing happens. The hand wheel doesn't turn either. Please help this is the first time I have tried to use it and disaster i need help to :{
First remove the needle and bobbincase.Then try turning the hand wheel.If it turns easily replace the bobbincase and try turning it by hand.If it still turns easily then put in a new needle and try turning it again.Make sure the needle flat portion is on the back side.If it still turns easily it is most likely fixed.Try threading the machine and see if it sews.

Thread is caught in the hook...Remove the upper thread and bobbin case, turn the hand wheel backwards and forwards by hand and remove the thread remands
Try to turn the handwheel by hand, with the machine switched "off".
If no success, then remove the bobin case from the shuttle hook, and try to turn the handwheel again.
If it persists not to turn, then remove the shuttle and clean the race, from lints and small threads.
Put everything back in the reverse order.
