The best way to transfer pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa:

Most Canon cameras use a "mini USB" cable. Your computer should automatically offer to download when you connect.

Can we download video from camera to computer, and if so what cable we should use? Thank you. Karel

Yes you can download photos and video from your camera. The type of cable depends on your camera model (the USB fits in the computer). If Your camera has a memory card you can use a card reader instead. Put the card in the reader and use picasa software to import the photos. Or go to My Computer and click on the memory card which appears there as E: or D: open folders there and copy/paste photos and videos. Download VLC player best for playing video.

My USB wire of the camera is lost.. could you please give me another way of uploading the pictures from camera to the computer ??

You can take SD memory card from your camera and use a card reader to upload photos to computer. If you don't have a card reader, the easiest way is to buy a new cable - any standard MiniUSB cable will fit.

Hi,

I highly recommend that you instead consider using a card reader to move the photos or videos to your computer. Card reader's do not require software (although Windows 98 and earlier may require drivers), are very inexpensive, are much faster downloading files from the camera, do not use the camera's batteries during the download, and are much less prone to file corruption of the photos during the download.Really, it would be better for the camera user if one of these was included with the camera instead of the cable and bundled software. You place the camera's card in the reader, plug the reader into the USB port, and your computer sees it as a hard drive. You simply copy/paste or drag/drop your photos onto your hard drive. For this simplicity, most professional photographers utilize card readers exclusively. You'll save yourself a lot of heartache if you convert to using one of these. Also make sure that you get a reader that is clearly stated capable of reading your card, particularly if you use SD-HC, XD, CF, or MS cards.

Thank you!

How do I download pictures onto my computer

To load your digital pictures onto your computer, you will need a card reader (hooked up to your computer via a USB) and your memory card. Some cameras allow you to hook a USB right into your camera without removing the memory card.
If required, you will load your memory card into the card reader. Your digital media will appear as another drive on your computer. Click the drive and your photos will appear in a folder on the drive. You can view your pictures immediately by double-clicking the file. From here, you can save your pictures directly to any folder on your computer.
Additional notes:
  • Consider purchasing photo manipulation software like PhotoShop or Fireworks. Use this software to fix common photo problems (poor light, etc) or add effects like text and color.
  • Print your photos on photo paper.
