HOW TO SHARE FILES AND PRINTERS BETWEN WINDOWS 7 AND VISTA

With three different versions of Windows being used now, you’ll probably find yourself trying to share files or printers between them. Today we take a look at how to share files and printers between Vista and Windows 7 machines.
In this example we are on a basic home network using Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit version) and Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 (32-bit version).
Set Windows 7 Share Settings
On the Windows 7 machine we need to set up a few things in Advanced Sharing Settings. First type network and sharing center into the search box in the Start Menu and hit Enter.
1net.png
Then click on Change advanced sharing settings…
3net.png
Now in Advanced Sharing Settings, make sure to turn on network discovery, file and printer sharing, and public folder sharing. Make sure these are enabled in both the Home or work and Public profiles.
4net.png
Depending on your setup, you might want to turn off password protected sharing. Other wise you’ll need to enter the password for each machine in, which isn’t that big of a deal. Turning it off while you’re setting it up makes things a bit easier though by saving a step.
5net.png
Set Vista Share Settings
On the Vista machine we need to double check and make sure it’s sharing settings are ready to go. Right-click on Network and choose Properties.
2vista.png
The Network and Sharing Center opens up. Under Sharing and Discovery we need to turn on File Sharing, Public Folder Sharing, and Network Discovery.
7vista.png
Also on the Vista machine you might want to turn off password protected sharing … but it’s completely up to you.
5vista.png
Share Files Windows 7 View
Now that we have the correct Settings On each machine, it’s time to put it to the test. Open up Network on the Windows 7 machine, and you should see all of the machines on the network. The Vista machine in this example is VISTAGEEK-PC.
2net.png
There was no need to enter a password to access the Vista machine because password protection is turned off. But now you can go through and see the User Shared folders. In this example both public and Users directories are shared.
6net.png
Share Files Vista View
Now on the Vista computer, double click on Network and you should see the Windows 7 machine (where in this instance it’s MYSTICGEEK-PC).
89vista.png
I enabled password protection on the Windows 7 machine so we can take a look at the login screen that will be displayed before connecting.
6vista.png
Then you’ll see the folders and devices that are shared. Here you can see the HP printer connected to the Windows 7 machine is available.
90vista.png
And you can continue browsing through all available shared folders and files.
88vista.png
Printer Sharing
As we showed above, you can see the printer connected to Windows 7. Let’s make sure we can connect to it and print a test document. In Vista click on the Start menu and type printers into the search box and hit Enter.
95print.png
Right-click on the shared printer and select Properties.
96print.png
Under the General tab click on the Print Test Page button.
97print.png
The following message is displayed while the test page prints out on the printer connected to your Windows 7 machine.
98print.png
Another test you might want to perform is opening a test document and making sure you can print that to the Windows 7 printer.
100default.png
Provided everything prints out successfully you might want to make it the default printer.
99default.png
Troubleshooting
If your machines aren’t able to see each other or the printer isn’t working…here are a few steps you might want to use to determine where the problem is.
Double check to make sure Network Discovery and File and Print Sharing is enabled on both machines as shown above.
4vista.png
In this example both machines are connected to a Belkin home wireless router and IP addresses are dynamically assigned. If you are using Static addresses make sure you can ping the IP address of each computer. If not, double check the assigned IP Address and cabling of each computer…
8ping.png
If the printer isn’t working, double check to make sure you have the latest drivers for each OS installed.

I installed the printer and share it. It is only available to user who are on x64bit. user with 32 bit win xp cant access it and install/share it. I have tried to download and install x86 driver but...

This is the HP solution for the problem

HP LaserJet, Color LaserJet and LaserJet MFP Products - Print driver Client / Server Connections in a mixed 32-bit and 64-bit environment ISSUE: 32-bit clients are not able to connect to shared Universal Print drivers or discrete drivers on a 64-bit print server or vice-versa. These scenarios may involve Server 2003/Server 2008 64-bit print servers with Windows XP, Vista, 7 32-bit clients. It is also possible that the server editions could be 32-bit versions with 64-bit clients. SOLUTION:
  1. The administrator will need to download the 64-bit AND 32-bt version of the print driver from www.hp.com . If the server involved is a 64-bit version, the 64-bit version of the print driver will need to be installed and mapped to the printer via TCP/IP. Ensure that the print driver has been shared on the network by going to the print driver properties and enabling Share this printer within the Sharing tab. c02030528.gif

Ensure that communication has been established and that a driver test page can be printed from the 64-bit server. Once functionality has been confirmed from the 64-bit server, proceed to the next step.

  2. Currently, 64-bit clients will be able to connect to the shared 64-bit print driver that has been installed on the 64-bit server as the architecture currently matches. However, if 32-bit clients wish to map to the shared 64-bit print driver on the 64-bit server, the 32-bit version of the same driver will need to be installed within the current 64-bit driver.
This process can be done by navigating to the printer properties of the 64-bit driver on the 64-bit server, clicking the Sharing tab and clicking the Additional Drivers button. c02030529.gif

  3. Once the administrator clicks on the Additional Drivers button, the next screen will allow the administrator to load the 32-bit drivers by placing a checkmark in the x86 button and clicking the OK button. c02030530.gif
  4. Once the administrator clicks the OK button, a print driver window will pop-up asking for the 32-bit driver components. Again, the administrator will need to download, and extract the 32-bit version of the print driver on the 64-bit server. Once the window below comes up, the administrator will need to navigate to the 32-bit driver components and select the appropriate driver .inf file.
For example, the UPD .inf file would be the first file in the list and be named hpcuXXXc.inf. c02030531.gif

Once the appropriate .inf file is selected, the 32-bit driver components will be installed within the 64-bit driver on the 64-bit server. This can be verified as both x86 (32-Bit) and x64 (64-Bit) boxes will now be checked and show the status as installed by clicking the Additional Drivers button compared to the screenshot in Step 3 above.

  5. Now that 64-Bit and 32-Bit drivers have been loaded onto the 64-Bit server, 32-Bit and 64-Bit clients can now navigate to the shared print driver on the 64-Bit server, by manually navigating to the shared print driver on the 64-Bit server from the client machine. Typically the path is \\servername\sharedprintername.

  6. Once the client maps to the shared print driver, printing should work successfully.

For problems or errors that continue to occur after completing the aforementioned process, ensure that the latest version of the print drivers are being used www.hp.com . If there are problems with older discrete drivers, it is recommended to use the latest version of the Universal Print Driver which can be found at www.hp.com/go/upd .

Cannon A610 + water = Print/Share button blue light !

Depends on how old your water ingress problem is.

If it is a recent problem, half fill a bowl with rice place your camera in it and cover the entire phone is rice, bury it.

Rice is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the camera.

No guarantee that will work though. Corrosion doesn't need much convincing to get going.
