That printer has a gear on the motor that cracks. You can fix it with a new or used motor. Or get a different machine on craigslist. Thank you, Steven 805-520-3003

The HP Laserjet 4L uses a standard 25pin parallel printer cable.
These can be purchased at your friendly computer shop or on the Internet.

Print is extremely light, almost non-exsistant on the HP LJet 4L

You need to clean the narrow window above where the cartridge sits, it gets covered with toner, just use a soft cloth. If still not better you may have a defective new cartridge.

The driver for the HP 4L printer should be built into Windows 98. Goto add printer, select HP and look for your model. If you cant find the exact model try a laserjet model that is close, it should work fine.

The image drum is not getting the correct signal at the correct time. It is time to retire the 4L and replace it with a newer, faster LaserJet. You'll be glad you did.

Old LaserJet 4L working perfectly. Just bought new generic toner cartridge and now getting shading over entire page, turning paper an almost-even gray, darkest at left edge. I'm suspecting cheap cartridge...

You're right about the cartridge and I suppose cleaning it means all the toner that the generic cartridge dumped. Turn off the machine, take out the cartridge and use a vacuum cleaner and a soft brush to get that extra toner out. After that use a soft cloth (not terry) to wipe down the inside.

HP laserjet 4L parallel to usb vista Jumbled font on test page

You mentioned parallel usb. The HP4L only has parallel. Make sure you specify LPT1 as the port you want. Try reinstalling the driver. It should be in the list of drivers.

There are two ways of cleaning the HP 4L's:

Purchase laser cleaning sheets.
In your user manual there is a section that instructs you to create your own cleaning sheets.

This will clean toner off the transfer roller and the fuser areas. Additional cleaning can be completed with canned air and the specialized cleaning towels also available for purchase. Remove toner cartridge and carefully wipe the interior of any toner or paper debris.

DO NOT USE ORDINARY PAPER OR CLOTH TOWELS!

These can leave debris in the printer and contaminate the transfer roller causing very poor quality prints.
