That means the driver is not working and or there is a problem with the firmware. You can go to Gateway, updates and downloads. Find the drivers for your model computer and download the drivers you need, which should fix the problem. If you have upgraded to a different OS, windows XP to windows Vista or 7 ... You can check for system drivers for these systems, or operate in the mode of you old OS but it sounds like a driver problem.
I guess you put the SD adapter into the card reader right out of the box? You first may have to partition/format it after unpacking it. Under WinXP I can recommend an utility "DiskPart" which you can start from the command prompt (Run... -> cmd). For further instructions (if it sounds to you to be the problem ) contact me again.
Check in the computer management / device manager window and see if there are proper drivers installed for the network / wireless card. If you are running windows XP take note if there is a red x or a yelloe questionmark. If there is a red x then the hardware is disabled. Right Click on it and left click on enable. If there id a yellow questionmark then Right Click and then left click on update driver. If you are running windows Vista then you will see a black linr under the device. You can try the same steps. I hope this helps.
