You can unlock it with the key. There is a hidden key hole on the front. Unlock it and press the reset button on the inside of the door. DON'T close the door until you have checked the code works with the door OPEN.

a1 locksmith advised me to To install batteries, remove cover between knob and keypad.Unlock door with the override key provided in the plastic bag attached to the owner's manual, and open the door using the knob. Remove battery cover located on the inside back of the door by sliding to the right. Insert the four batteries as indicated. Replace the battery cover.

Please follow the below instructions to unlock and lock depending on the series of sentry fire safe security you have.
H & F Series:
To unlock and open: 1. Insert key in lock and turn counterclockwise. 2. Apply downward pressure on top of the safe, while pushing the latch in to release.
NOTE: Due to compression of the gasket, the unit will require slightly more force than a safe that does not have a gasket.
To close and lock:
1. Close and press down on lid to engage latch. Safe can now be transported without locking it. 2. Insert key in lock and turn clockwise.
HD & FD Series:
To unlock and open: 1. Insert key in lock and turn clockwise. 2. Pull up from bottom of latch while pushing down on lid to release.
NOTE: Due to compression of the gasket, the unit will require slightly more force than a safe that does not have a gasket.
To close and lock: 1. Close and while pushing down on the lid, press down on the latch until it is secure. 2. Insert key in lock and turn counterclockwise.

The lock needs to be 'picked' or alternatively drilled the latter would destroy the lock. Any locksmith should be able to open and rekey the lock without damaging the lock or safe.
