It is new and I'm trying to set it up but there seems to be no information about how to make it download recordings to an external hard disk for archiving, nor any comment I have found about how to use the supplied USB port.

I believe the simpletech you have is a plug and play, you should not need a driver to access it.

Hi there,
Yes you can just take the hard drive out of the case, can use it with any other case, you can also just put it inside your computer and connect it to the sata cable :)
Heres a case you could use for your drive... Click Here

Many thanks

Thanks for your responses...
I've pretty much decided that it must be a hardware problem within the harddrive itself...Can anyone lead me in the right direction to maybe take out the harddrive to put into another external shell in order to hopefully recover my data? Again I'm using a Seagate Freeagent Desktop 500GB external harddrive.

Hello there DLBurkhart.
Here's your geek-steer ...
"...is emitting strange whining sounds every now and then ... Is this strange noise a sign of an impending problem?" == EVERY strange HDD noise is ALWAYS a sign of impending failure.
Peform a "Check Disk" on it ...
chkdsk DRIVE_LETTER /X /R
Good luck, and please do post back ...
Today's the best day of my life ... and NOW you're part of it!

Hi Colin Castello-Jones, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box?
Hi Mark, thanksf or your interest. My "old" Humax Foxsat HDR satellite receiver has an "optiom plus" button on the remote control which lets you into "file manager" to change your recorded listings to an external hard disk for archiving, and freeing up space in the Humax. My new Humax HDR - 100s 1TB has larger internal hard drive (1TB) but does not seem to have a way of transferring recordings to an external hard drive for archiving, although it does hav a USB port, which I would have thought would be for that purpose. I am seriously puzzled. Surely devices do not evolve backwards, and this new machine is kindly commented on by many people posting comments. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Colin.
