    The jacks available are phono, video and tape. The CD jack is in use. I have tried tape, and it doesn't seem to work. I have tried video and it doesn't work either, so I won't continue with that. Do I have options that will work?

    I have jacks for the sources plugged in in the appropriate places on the back of the receiver, then choose the one to play from the front of the receiver. These are Video 1/VDP; Video2/VCR (I have never used these); Tape 2-Monitor;

Connect the 3.5 mm. plug at one end of the cable to the headphone jack on your phone and the RCA red and white plugs at the other end of the cable into the red and white AUDIO IN (L/R) jacks on the receiver. Do not plug anything in any video inputs or outputs.

Testimonial: "I have connected the single plug to the headphone jack on my phone, and have tried the RCA red and white plugs in the Audio In jacks for tape, phone and video (at separate times). I tried the CD ones, which didn't work either, although I prefer not to use them anyways as they are generally in use."

How to connect Sony dvd player to onkyo TX-8511 receiver

The TX-8511 is an older AV receiver with only composite video inputs. Your DVD player may not provide this type of output as it's not capable of HD video. If your dvd player has a composite output with a Red, White & Yellow set of outputs, that will connect into the Video 2 inputs on the receiver. Your TV will need to connect up to the Video2 or Monitor output. You'll need a set of composite video cables with the red-white & yellow RCA type plugs.

Here is a link to the manual for this receiver:

I need to know how to go hook up my reciever to my tv soo i can get sound from the tv..

Get the audio from the same place the TV does - your cable/satellite box. It will have an RCA Audio Out pair. Run it to any available input such as CD, Tape 1 In, Tape 2 In, Video 1 or Video 2 In.

If you're already using that output to theTV just get a pair of RCA cable splitters and share it with the receiver. That way you can watch TV and listen through its own speakers (news and such) or turn the TV volume down and select the input on the receiver for better audio.

What you DON'T want to do is actually run audio through your TV and its questionable audio electronics into your hi-fidelity receiver.

I just hooked up my old Onkyo TX-8511 receiver to my bose speakers, which is also hooked up to a subwolfer. When I turn the volume up the system goes into protect mode. Any solutions.

Just check your speaker cabling again. Make sure that all of them are seated properly, none is touching each other or the body of receiver. Rewire if necessary..
Are you using banana plugs for connecting speaker or just directly. Some times even a little tiny wire touching the receiver could trigger the protect mode. Be careful, since protect mode is sometimes not fast enough and it could blown a few trasistors in the power circuit.

Otherwise, do your bose speakers play out load on other systems?

T.v.

If you have a VCR it is easy. Just plug RCA cables into audio out right and audio out left (on VCR) and other ends into VCR audio in right and left at rear of your receiver. If there are two sets of video audio inputs, push button on front of receiver to agree with where you plugged cables in. (ie. Video 1 and video 2)
