I have a 300 savage serial no. 741346 and on left side is 300 savage and looks like SP after savage. I don't see any reference to SP in any remarks about the Savage. I purchased the gun in homestead, pa. In 1955. Does the SP have any significance. Can the serial no. Give a date it was manufactured.

Donald, I found a blog that states the SP stands for "Savage Proofed" meaning it passed factory test firing. Lots of other responses regarding the SP stamp as well:

. Our database contains values of serial numbers through 566,000 which ended the year 1950. Serials did not strictly run sequentially. Therefore, dates may be a year different, especially near the "boundaries".
