UN PLUGGING
SOURCE: whirlpool washer humming!
If you open the lid, does the humming stop? If so that means your lid switch is good, the hum is from you motor, which means your transmission is messed up. You need a service call.

Hi, the humming is coming from the washer motor, and it is either the motor is running or not running.
If the motor is NOT running, or spinning, then the transmission may be frozen and in that case you may need to replace the washer, as transmissions are about $165 for just the part.
But if the motor is running, all you need do is to check the belt or motor coupling as your motor is not engaging properly.....
SOURCE: Have front loading Whirlpool Duet
Hi,
To manually open the door on Duet washers, remove the panel below the door (three screws at bottom of machine) then reach inside up by the latch area, there should be a plastic tab hanging down. If you pull that tab down it should unlock your door. This info and the following info is based on the standard whirlpool duet washer, I'm judging that the internals between the regular and the sport are not much different.
Do you mean there's no power to the machine when you say "will not turn on" or do you mean it will not start a cycle. In most cases if you have power to the machine it won't start a cycle until it sees that the door is locked. So if you're having door lock problems one main problem is the CCU board. On this circuit board (inside machine, top, back, plastic case) there are bad solder joints also called cold solder joints where the relays (5 of them) and the spade connectors are supposed to be soldered firmly to the circuit board. The relays and the spade connectors control communications between the CCU and the door lock (and motor control).
The fix is not difficult (if this is the problem) just remove the plastic case with the board in it (it's easier that way) and touch-up those points I mentioned before. If you're not up on soldering techniques just take the board in the case, and this response, to a good appliance repair shop and they should be able to help you out. Good Luck
