Are you on android version 2.1?
you can go to settings, about phone, and look for Firmware Version. If its 2.1 this is the latest update for this phone.

If you are at versions 2.1 the only way to get the phone to version 2.2 is to root your phone and install a custom ROM which voids your warranty.

What is an Android Custom Recovery, and Why Would I Want One?

A custom recovery is a third-party recovery environment. Flashing this recovery environment onto your device replaces the default, stock recovery environment with a third-party, customized recovery environment. This is a bit like flashing a custom ROM like CyanogenMod - but, instead of replacing your device's Android operating system, it replaces the recovery environment.

A custom recovery environment will do the same things as the stock Android recovery. However, it will also have additional features. Custom recoveries often have the ability to create and restore device backups. Custom recoveries allow you to install custom ROMs. ClockworkMod even offers a "ROM Manager" app that allows you to access many of these features from a running Android system - this app requires a custom recovery installed to function.

*Popular Custom Recoveries*
ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM) can create and restore NANDroid backups - backups of an Android device's entire file system. ClockworkMod offers a ROM manager with a file browser that allows you to easily browse for and install custom ROMs via ClockworkMod Recovery and manage and restore backups. It also has other advanced features that will be useful if you're installing and dealing with custom ROMs.

Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) is a touch-based recovery environment. Unlike other recovery environments - including Android's default stock recovery, which needs to be controlled with the device's volume and power buttons - this recovery environment has a touch-based interface you can use by tapping your fingers on on-screen buttons. TWRP even supports themes. Like CWM, TWRP offers ROM installation and backup features the stock recovery environment doesn't.

CWM and TWRP are the two most popular custom recoveries, but other custom recoveries may be available for some devices.

How to Flash you Android phone with a Custom ROM

In order to flash your Android phone (for example Sony Ericsson Xperia, HTC desire, Samsung Galaxy etc.) with a custom ROM you need to follow these steps. <b><u>PLEASE read the notes at the bottom first before going through these steps.</u></b><br /> <br /> <ol> <li>First of all you need to "<b>root</b>" your phone.<br />Rooting your phone enables special applications to get higher level access to the phone. Rooting the phone is a simple procedure. Simply download<span><b>Paul's Visionary+ tool </b>(<a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=447543&d=1290501865">click here</a>) and send this APK file to your phone using bluetooth or USB cable. Run this file on the mobile and install it. When the installation is complete run it and select "temproot now" option from the list. When the process is complete select "attempt permroot now" option. Restart your phone and you are done.<br /><img src="wiqi546.png" /><br /></span></li> <li>Install <b>ROM Manager</b>.<br />Open Android Manager and install ROM Manager.<br /><img src="wiqi546_1.jpg" /><br /><span></span></li> <li><span>Install </span><span><b>ClockWorkMod Recovery</b>.<br />Simply run the ROM Manager and it will ask you to install </span><span>ClockWorkMod Recovery. Click yes and it will be install. During the installation you may get a prompt for super user permission. Make sure you tap allow. Will note n7000 get further android os updates

The only way to get 4.2.2 is this:

The first generation of the Galaxy Note line, N7000 initially runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread and later features Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Owners of the device can update their Galaxy Note N7000 to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with special features such as colour inversion, notification drawer, lock screen shortcuts and custom Quick Settings.

Using Slim Bean ROM, your Galaxy Note N7000 will run the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean containing all features of the Android OS, customisation and tweaking capabilities, amazing themes, stability, constant update and relatively bloat-ware free system.
Warning: Slim Bean ROM is a customised ROM and its developers are not liable for any damages on your device. The featured ROM only applies to Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 and should never be installed to any other devices. Read and follow the instructions carefully to prevent damaging your handset. Do this at your own risk.
Requirements:
Before you perform the installation, make sure that your device has met all prerequisites.
  • Your device must be rooted to be able to flash the custom ROM. Click one of the OS version for rooting instructions: Gingerbread 2.3.5 or Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
  • Create a backup of all your personal information, settings and data files on your device. Do not use Samsung Kies since Slim Bean ROM is a custom ROM which won't be detected by the program.
  • Uninstall all antivirus apps on your handset and temporarily disable any security programs on your computer. It may interfere the installation progress.
  • Make sure that the battery level is at least 50 per cent to prevent any power interruption during the installation.
  • Enable USB debugging mode on your device.
  • Install a custom recovery app such as ClockWorkMod recovery or TWRP.
  • Install USB drivers on your computer for the Galaxy Note N7000.
  • Download the Slim Bean Build 6 Android 4.2.2 ROM and the Slim Google Apps package on your computer.
Flashing Instructions
1. Connect your Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 to the computer via USB cable.
2. Copy the Slim Bean custom ROM and Slim Google Apps package to the external memory of your device. Do not extract any of them.
3. Disconnect your device from the computer then reboot it into Recovery mode using the custom recovery app.
4. Inside the Recovery mode, select "backup and restore > backup" to create a nAndroid backup of the current ROM which you can restore later in case of any problems.
5. After the backup, select "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" to clear all data on your device.
6. Then select "install zip from SD card > choose zip from SD card" and choose the Slim Bean ROM zip file to install it. Do the same with the Slim Google Apps zip file.
7. Once the installation is complete, go back then select "reboot system now." Boot up may take 5 minutes for its first run.
Congratulations! Your Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 is running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean using Slim Bean ROM with tons of other features not found on a regular stock ROM.
