Am trying to add clarification to an earlier question. The scale I am asking about is a wall mount kitchen scale: the make is Salter, the model 1601. It worked fine for several years until I changed the batteries. Now one has to put a brick on it before the scale responds. So it does work but not as intended. It is meant to measure from 1 gram to 3 kg. I'm wondering if it simply needs to be recalibrated.
Is it possible you put the batteries in the wrong way? Sometimes a device will still have power in that situation, even though it won't work as expected. Try a new set of batteries, but clean the contacts in the battery compartment first, and double-check the battery orientation.
Testimonial: "Thanks Laurie, but no that's not it, I've tested the batteries, tried a second set but the scale still remains unresponsive to anything under a ½ kg..."

The middle part slides out. You'll need a small knife or a screwdriver to pry it out gently.
There are openings on two sides. One side has a larger opening than the other. Make sure you pry it out of the lager opening.
Once you gently slide it out, you'll see the two batteries. Make sure the positive side is facing up when you put them back in.
Hope that helps!

Your salter scale has a 15 year warranty. I would call the customer service number 1-866-843-3905 and ask them why it won't zero to weigh anything. They may replace your product.
SOURCE: I have the Salter Scales
Hi,
I just had a play with mine as I wanted to change the weight mode too.
The solution is this:
While the machine is OFF, press and hold the button for about 5-10 seconds.
The display will go from 8888 to show the weight measurement (lb oz) at the top of the display.
Press the button to select the weight you want.
You should be able to continue with your baking :o)
Hope this helps
