Possibly because of ice build-up under ice bucket, a common occurrence. It needs to be removed and wiped off periodically. And the ice sometimes makes it difficult to remove the ice bucket, so you may need to use some warm (not hot) water in a spray bottle (squirt warm water under the seam at bottom of bucket) to get it loose. Of course, this is all assuming the bucket is the type attached to the door.

Refrigerator not cooling why

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You have an older unit. Some parts are no longer available.

There are 3 possible component failures:

1.) Refrigerator Adaptive Defrost Control Board - This has the most probability for your problem.
25467327-2wop33oc00rzrbarpm5t54vf-3-0.jpg Substitution: 61005988 Cost $78.00
This is located in your fresh food section control housing. You must drop the control housing to access it.

2.) Defrost Heater - This component is located in your freezer section. You must remove the back wall to access the heater.
The back wall on your model has slots and screws that are both difficult to remove and more difficult to replace. Even harder is the string the wires up through the cooling coil without cutting your self on the razor sharp fins on the cooling coil.

25467327-2wop33oc00rzrbarpm5t54vf-3-2.jpg Substitution: 61006199 Cost: $48.00

3.) Refrigerator Evaporator Fan Motor - This too is behind the back freezer wall which is difficult to remove and re-install.
25467327-2wop33oc00rzrbarpm5t54vf-3-5.jpg Part #: 61005339 Cost: $106.00

Ok, what do we do?

A.) If you know someone who is above average mechanically inclined you may decide to replace the components.

B.) If I were still working for Sears Homes Services, I would leave you with a bill for about $450.00 or more.

Normally a refrigerator should last you 20-30 years.

Your unit is old. You are at the point that components have reached there life cycle. You repair this problem, then 6 month to a year another component is going to fail.

My I suggest; go into the internet and search for Sears Outlet Store (Scratch and Dent). You can save several hundred dollars and will get a one year warrantee.

Go simple. I have a 23 year old Kitchen Aide top freezer.

Stay away from Samsung and LG units unless you want trouble.

Stay away from bottom or drawer freezers. They are high maintenance.

Stay away from units that have either ice makers on the door or ice buckets on the door. When you open the freezer door, warm air from the room will cause block icing. Ice makers and ice buckets belong in the freezer.

Removed ice bucket to clean & now unable to return it into freezer how is this done?

Lift the ice level bar to the up position, the bucket should easily slide back in place. Make sure to drop the ice level bar back into down position to allow for ice to be made.

Dispenses crushed ice only, not cubed

remove the dispenser bucket where the ice drops into inside the freezer and get a Tupper ware bowl, remove the bucket and dump this ice into the bowl, then rinse with the dispenser bucket with warm tap water to melt any ice on each end of this ice maker, then wipe dry and replace into freezer where you removed it to get cold again and leave empty till the next harvest of ice, this can be normal on some units after so many weeks,as it will not let the blades retract so as just to dispense only cubes, once bucket is cleaned of ice jams the solenoid and blades will again retract for cubes only

1.Check shut off arm fails to move due over stored ice cubes in the ice bucket. Remove ice cubes and make free shut off arm to move.
2. Check water pressure. If less pressure will cause for non making ice cubes.
3.Check freezer temp. Setting must be 5degree and less.
4.Check power to solenoid valve for water flowing is working. Locate your ice maker, remove the ice bucket. Pull the coveroff the end of the ice maker. Locate the holes "V" and "L". Take a paper clip(jump clip) and tape. Straight the clip and put tape in middle. Hold the tapedside and insert the clip into "V" and "L". This sends the power to water valve. If water goes into ice maker, water valve is good. If not mechanism of solenoid is dusty. Call repairman to clean and re fix it. Thanks.

to solve the frozen food problem, turn the temp back to 4. this should be the factory recomended setting. the only dispensing crush ice is probably a bad solinoid. you will find this behind the back wall. it engages to lift the thin metal rod on the bottom of the ice bucket to dispense cubed ice. and the ice being frozen in the bucket is probably a bad ice flapper in the door. it's letting warm moist air into the ice bucket that is freezing

My u line under counter ice maker (bin, not clear ice) will take forever to make ice. Once it starts to make ice and drop it in the bin, several hours later it will stop making ice and the made ice will...

Can you tell me the model? If its a bi series then it should make ice every 45 min. temps should be 10-15 degrees in bucket. If its a combo then it could take 24 hours to make 1/2 of the bucket.Should be the same temp in your bucket.Make sure you dont have heavy frost in the freezer, Make sure the condenser fan is running and clean. If the temperature in freezer is alot warmer than this and everythng is running then it could be a leak in the system. If its colder than that then set the thermostat to a warmer temperature

Hot house,, effect on freezer temperature

cork....this is interesting. First, I'm going to suggest that you remove all the ice from the unit and clean it. Use a hair dryer to melt the ice and then make it dry. Reassemble. Many of these units allow you to remove the ice maker bucket. Don't forget to clean that up. There is a way on many of these units to turn off the ice maker...If you leave it too full, the defrost cycles will melt the ice together causing your problem. On my Kenmore, I keep the bucket about half full. Generally, the preset temp should be 40 in the fridge and 5-10 in the freezer. If either of these is warmer, you have shorter food life. By the way...Mom will feel warmer if she has a humidifier in the house. Get the cold vapor type.
