SOURCE: My foodsaver Vac 420 Vacuum Sealer won't heat and

This is likely happening because the unit cannot detect that a vacuum has formed, and because of this, the unit will not seal the bags, with the gaskets around the vacuum channel being the probable culprit. The Foodsaver gaskets will deform and/or dry out with time, just like in any device, but you don't necessarily have to replace them. I've tried this inexpensive solution on my own Foodsaver V2490, and it works perfectly.
Buy some food-grade silicone grease and apply it to both the upper and lower gaskets. I remove the gaskets and coat both sides with a thin layer of grease before replacing them in their respective channels. And since this grease will be absorbed and/or dry out with time, you will have to do this occasionally, so I also flip the gaskets (i.e. turn them over) whenever I apply the grease.
You can buy a 2 oz container of silicone grease at any dive store, or you can buy it over the Internet by searching for "Trident silicone grease".
This is a link where you can buy it for around $7.00:
Dolphin Dive Center
I do not work at this dive center, but I am a scuba diver and already had some grease that I use for the numerous rubber gaskets in my gear. The 2 oz. jar will last you several years, and you will find many other uses for it around the house since the grease will last longer than a spray.

My FoodSaver will not activate when I insert a bag. The accessory unit works fine.

It sounds like you are having some issues with your FoodSaver vacuum sealer. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the problem:
  1. Make sure that the FoodSaver is plugged in and turned on.
  2. Check the sealing strip on the vacuum sealer to make sure it is clean and free of debris. A dirty or damaged sealing strip can prevent the vacuum sealer from working properly.
  3. Check the vacuum bag to make sure it is properly positioned in the vacuum sealer. The bag should be inserted with the open end facing the sealing strip.
  4. Make sure that the bag is not too full. Overfilling the bag can prevent the vacuum sealer from working properly.
  5. If the problem persists, you may need to take the FoodSaver to a repair center for further diagnosis and repair.

Foodsaver troubleshooting

The same thing happened to mine and I found a really, really inexpensive way to resolve it. I don't use original foodsaver bags and I found out that their thickness might not be detected correctly so it won't vacuum. To compensate for this, I used an ordinary piece of notebook paper. I cut it to a size of 4 1/2" by 1 1/2". I set the long side in the middle of the liquid catching tray and let it lean back towards the heat strip. Make sure it doesn't cover the heat strip or it won't seal. Now I inserted the bag as the directions say, close and lock the top, and it vacuums and seals perfectly. b40a3e78-1fd3-4c38-9291-c5c4e3885648.jpg

Vacum works heatseal does not seal can i replace seal

Sealing always tends to be the problem with FoodSaver because during the course of normal wear and tear, the sealing strip and wire will naturally need to be replaced.

You can get replacement heating wires and strips at www.elementandteflon.com

We started out selling just replacement parts for heat impulse sealers but we kept on getting customer requests for FoodSaver parts so we've added that section to our website.

Foodsaver pro locked up. 3 green lites blink off and on. is the problem fixable?

The reset button is the small black rubber covered hole on the left side of the vacuum channel. If you press down on that with something like a knitting needle with the unit on, it should reset

Foodsaver compact vac 550 sealing strip doesn't seal

My machine stopped working because the sealing ribbon was broken and the tape was worn. FoodSaver no longer does repairs. I knew the wire was called nichcome ribbon so I searched that. I checked the resistance of the ribbon on my machine, it was about 3.8 ohms. I found a site called mpakonline.com and from their site I bought 1/16 x .005 nichrome ribbon and 3/8 x 5 MIL. x 18 YD Acrylic Teflon Tape. The total cost of these items was about $36.00, the ohm value of their ribbon was 1.66 somewhat less.I used ends from radio shack made the repair and it has been working fine for the last two months and I have enough material leftover for about ten more repairs.
