The motor starts fine and idles alright. When placed in forward it runs fine at low RPM's. At approximatly 1/4 throttle, under load, a loud banging noise starts and the RPMs will not go any higher without the engine faulting.
Does this sound like an issue with the power head or a lower unit slip problem? I have heard some stories about the 3 cylinder models having spark issues on the lower cylinder under certain loads.
Did you change plugs? If you did chek the plug to see if piston has hit the end of plug. Do a compresion check Jim OMC retired Mech
Pull the spark plugs and see if they look like there burnning the same if so then i dought its a spark issue and if it was in the lower unit u wouldnt here a loud anything it sounds like a rod bearing i have had the same thing happen to several yamahas under a load
Trying to find a lower unit my cracked
If the problem starts around 1500 rpm it could be the computer is this an oil injected unit?
when i run my 50 hp 3 cyl out of oil in the tank it does the same thing but my alarm is sounding
check the oil in the tank if you have one check the float in the oil tank and the connection of the wires to the float
hope this helps
