Make sure gas valve is open, and run switch is ON. I'm not a fan of B&S engines. I have a Generac generator with NO problems.Pull start the unit and let run for 5 mins. Turn off. Now try the electric start. If it does not start, you have an elctical problem when using starter. Make sure battery is fully charged before starting. Hope it helps.

I have a Briggs and Stratton Elite series5500 watt portable generator. I cannot get it started. It has gas and oil but will not start. What could be the problem

Ensure choke is turned on while starting.
Ensure spark lead is fully pushed onto plug.
Remove spark plug and check there is a spark by keeping spark plug against body of engine and cranking engine, if no spark check there are no broken wires in ignition circuit.
Turn off gas tap if present. Remove the float bowl while holding a container under it to collect any gas. Turn on tap and check the fuel flows freely.
Check the air filter is clean. If it has foam elements these can be washed with warm water and detergent, rinsed and then oiled with a teaspoon of oil evenly distributed through the foam.

My 7000 watt stand by gen. did not start when the elec. went out. It can be started both manually and on auto but only runs for about a minute then shuts off. It has propane and the oil is okay. What...

Check the Filter. If clogged it will not start. Also drain the fuel and inspect it. If the mix is off or if there is oil in it when there shouldn't be then that could be the problem.

does this engine have a low oil shutdown unit on it

if so check the oil level an top it up it could be interupting ignition

be sure your tanks are full and connections are good and tight
brush soapy water around connections to see if any have a leak

if not oil level shutdown , then sounds like a fuel problem

suggest have a gas serviceman take a look

these units can be tricky to solve

My propane generator engine has apark and gas

For a quick test.

Check engine oil.

Remove wire from low oil sensor and see if it starts every time.

If that works change oil and replace low oil sensor.

Hope this tip helps to solve your problem.

Hello, I have a Briggs & Stratton 7000 watt generator Home Standby with manual transfer switch, it starts but when you release the switch into run mode it dies, any ideas? Generator has been in service...

These units are equipped with a low/no oil shutdown. When you hold the switch over to start it, it overrides the shutdown interlock until the unit builds oil pressure in the engine. When you release the switch to the run position the interlock is engaged. Ensure there is sufficient oil in the crankcase, check the wiring from the oil pressure switch to the ignition cutout-(it may have been pulled off or damaged). If that checks out, then either jump across the 2 wires at the oil sending unit or disconnect the harness from the sending unit to test to see if the sending unit is bad. Try both unless you know the switch is normally open or normally closed. Replace the sending unit if needed.

Stops and starts

Hi there,
Most home standby generators are setup to run once a week so as to keep the engine lubed up and the generator windings dry. So if yours is comming on once a week at about the same time and running for something like 15 minutes, that's what is going on.
On the other hand, if your generator is starting and the switch is transferring somewhat randomly, you could have a problem with the neutral connection in your system, the power could really be going out and coming back on, and/or the control board in your generator could be broken.

Regards,
Carl
