Apple had never taken Blu-ray seriously. The company didn't really care to release a computer with a Blu-ray drive, not even once. The company only had a DVD drive featured in some of its Mac computers and laptops which had been put to an end recently. Apple had stopped giving DVD drives to users in order to make its computers slimmer and lighter. The last MacBook that you can find with a DVD drive in it is the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15, which Apple had stopped selling in 2016. So it's only logical that you won't find Blu-ray player software on a Mac computer.

But you can still play Blu-ray on Mac with some free software tools.

Of course you can, as long as you have a Blu-ray drive for your Mac. Then you can download some 8free Blu-ray player programs on your Mac. You can try Leawo Blu-ray Player which is a free Blu-ray player, a free DVD player and a free 4K player.

I put in a blu ray disc but it is not playing in any media player and the disc drives do not recognise that a disc has been entered

Unless the drive in your laptop is a blu-ray drive, it won't recognize a blu-ray disc. A blu-ray drive can recognize and play a regular DVD, but it doesn't work the other way around.

If your computer is indeed fitted with a blu-ray drive, the laser lens may need cleaning. On a laptop, you usually have clear access to the lens with the tray open, so you can try cleaning it with a cotton swab moistened with lens cleaner. Or the disc itself may have a problem. Try another disc and see if the trouble continues.

If the computer doesn't have a blu-ray drive and you will frequently want to play blu-ray discs, get a USB external blu-ray drive. It's easier to find one of those than to locate a suitable blu-ray replacement drive for a laptop. There are many variations of drives used in laptops, but an external drive will always be compatible. And you'll be able to use it with other computers not blu-ray equipped.

How to rip Blu-ray DVD on Mac for Free

Now that Blu-ray players are becoming more common in the living room, so are the Blu-ray DVD movies we watch on them. To rip a Blu-ray disc on Mac, you need an External Blu-ray Writer to enable your Mac read Blu-ray disc, and then downloaded the free MakeMKV beta to extract video and audio files from Blu-ray DVD to your hard drive, preserving the full quality of your Blu-ray DVD movies.

Rip Blu-ray DVD movies to MKV on the Mac

Connect external Blu-ray writer to your Mac and launch MakeMKV, and the software immediately found my USB-connected drive, and let me read the Blu-ray disc inside.
42fc2c5.png

It then will present you with a list of titles, each with a file size next to it. The first title was the main movie—easy to tell because it listed the number of chapters and also displayed the largest file size of the group.

Clicking the disclosure triangle next to that title shows the various audio and subtitle tracks contained in the movie, and let you deselect those you don’t want. Then click the Make MKV button and a MKV file will be on your hard drive when the conversion is done.

Play ripped Blu-ray movies on Mac

MakeMKV basically strips the copy protection from movies and then copies them into an MKV container. The result is a perfect copy of the movie, at its original frame size and data rate, which I was able to play on my Mac Pro using the free VLC media player.

Is the philips dvd player dvp3982 ale to play blu=ray disks?

DVD players cannot play Blu-Ray discs. Most Blu-Ray players have DVD support, which means they can play DVDs as well as Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, the DVP3982 is not a DVD player, not a Blu-ray player, therefore it cannot support this format.

How to convert Blu-ray and DVD movies to QuickTime Player compatible format on...

bdrippermac_quicktime_20100430.jpg

Apple has detailed it clearly on its official site that QuickTime will attempt to open files with file extensions associated with audio or video formats listed as below:

Video formats:
QuickTime Movie (.mov), MPEG-4 (.mp4, .m4v), MPEG-1, 3GPP, 3GPP2, AVI, DV

Audio formats:
iTunes Audio (.m4a, .m4b, .m4p), MP3, Core Audio (.caf), AIFF, AU, SD2, WAV, SND, AMR

More than that, QuickTime can play movies using the following codecs:

Video Codecs:
MPEG-4 (Part 2), H.264, H.263, H.261, Apple ProRes, Apple Pixlet, Animation, Cinepak, Component Video, DV, DVC Pro, Graphics, Motion JPEG, Photo JPEG, Sorenson Video 2, Sorenson Video 3

Audio Codecs:
AAC (MPEG-4 Audio), HE-AAC, Apple Lossless, MP3, AMR Narrowband, MS ADPCM, QDesign Music 2, Qualcomm PureVoice (QCELP), IMA 4:1, MACE 3:1, MACE 6:1, ALaw 2:1, ULaw 2:1, 24-Bit Integer, 32-Bit Integer, 32-Bit Floating Point, 64-Bit Floating Point

Obviously, Blu-ray (.m2ts) and DVD (.vob) are out of the above mentioned range. Even though you purchase QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component from online Apple Store and install it on your Mac, it is still unable to play commercial DVDs (such as Hollywood movies), because they are usually encrypted with special CSS anti-piracy technology, not to mention the much more strictly protected Blu-ray movies. However, that doesn’t means you are totally banned to watch Blu-ray and DVD movies in QuickTime. Actually, an available Blu-ray and DVD ripper for Mac will definitely do you a favor to remove copy protections, and rip the movies to a Mac QuickTime Player compatible format. Go to find a step-by-step tutorial about how to convert Blu-ray and DVD movies to Mac QuickTime Player supported format.

The decryption software we recommended is Pavtube Blu-Ray DVD Ripper for Mac. It is an independent and professional utility to rip both Blu-ray discs and general DVDs to your wanted HD or SD media formats. With full Blu-ray disc support, it is able to remove copyright protections of your BD disc, no matter BD+, or AACS, even the latest MKB V17 is supported as well. See the detailed tutorial as below.

Step 1: Free download, install and launch this blue ray ripper Mac.
Once you run it, click "BD/DVD Folder" or "IFO File" to load your BD or DVD files.

bdrippermac_total_20100430.jpg

Step 2: Select H.264 Video (*.mp4) as output format for QuickTime
Follow "Common Video" > "H.264 Video (*.mp4)":
bdrippermac_format_20100430.jpg

Step 3: Click "Settings" button to adjust video and audio parameters
Notice that which parameter to select has close relationship with the hardware configurations of your computer, so before your adjustment, read the following info attentively.

To play HD video, a large amount of data must be processed by your computer. A powerful system will deliver the best playback quality.
Recommended hardware configurations for H.264 HD playback on Macintosh:

For 1280x720 (720p) video at 24-30 frames per second:
[*]1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 or 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo or faster Macintosh computer

[*]At least 256MB of RAM
[*]64 MB or greater video card

For 1920x1080 (1080p) video at 24 frames per second:
[*]Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 or 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo or faster Macintosh computer
[*]At least 512MB of RAM
[*]128MB or greater video card

Now you are ready to set advanced settings according to the hardware configurations of your computer. Our computer satisfies the above mentioned "1280x720 (720p) video at 24-30 frames per second", so we changed the settings as below:

bdrippermac_settings_20100430.jpg

Step 4: Click "Convert" button to start Mac Blu-ray ripping.
Once the ripping task is completed, you can click "Open" button to get the output H.264 .mp4 videos for your QuickTime Player effortlessly. Have fun.

Solutions to watch Blu-ray movies on Mac and WD TV

Not an easy thing for Mac users to play back Blu-ray movies, even they are your personal purchasing. I’ve summarized three ways that Mac users have usually used to playback Blu-ray movies as following. Frankly speaking, the former two solutions seems a little troublesome, personally, I prefer the last one.
Solution 1: With the help of AnyDVD HD via Windows:
Requirements:
- A Windows PC with a built-in Blu-ray drive or an external BD drive.
- AnyDVD HD
- A Mac: MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, or Mac Pro
- Latest VLC media player or MPlayer
How-To:
1. Insert your Blu-ray disc to the BD drive, and run AnyDVD HD to remove copyright protections of your disc, no matter what kinds of protections your BD discs adopted, BD+, or AACS, AnyDVD HD is capable of dealing with them. Then you will get unprotected.m2ts files after the access of AnyDVD HD.
2. Copy the .m2ts files to an external drive or a USB stick, whatever, just let the Mac be able to read them.
3. Use the latest VLC media player or MPlayer to play unprotected .m2ts files.
Solution 2: Running Windows on Mac via Boot Camp
What you will need:
- A BD drive
- A Mac
- Blu-ray playback software on Windows, like Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 Ultra
How-To:
1. Install Boot Camp and Windows
I do not mention too much about this process, because Apple has already given the full direction about it here.
2. Connect BD drive with your computer, and Playback Blu-ray via PowerDVD 9 Ultra on the newly installed Windows OS.
Solution 3: Rip BD with Pavtube Blu-Ray Ripper for Mac
What you will need:
- A BD drive
- Pavtube Blu-Ray Ripper for Mac
This ripper provides directly copy function as well as HD video output option, so there is no need to worry about the output file quality of your Blu-ray movie.
The above two methods are all depending on the assistant of Windows, while the third one is not, thus I’d like to show the detailed operating steps about this one in detail.

Easy-to-use steps:
1. Load BD files through "DVD Folder" or "IFO File".
2. Select audio track from the pull down menu of "Audio", both Dolby TrueHD audio and DTS-HD Master Audio are supported.
3. Click the drop-down list of "Format" to select output format. Directly copy, HD video, iPhone, iPod, PS3, and many other devices and formats are all supported.
4. Click "Settings" button to adjust audio and video parameters like codec name, bit rate, aspect ration, frame rate, sample rate, and audio channels(5.1 channels is included).
5. Click "Browse" button to specify save path.
6. Click "Convert" button to start conversion.
Once the conversion is done, you are able to find out the output files via clicking "Open" button. If you choose directly copy, you can use VLC or MPlayer to play the output .m2ts files, if you converted to other usual formats, like mov, mp4, then you can use QuickTime player or whatever to play back them.
Via the Blu-Ray Ripper for Mac mentioned in solution 3, you can also absolutely realize playback BD movies on your HDTV with WD TV. Both WD TV Live HD Media Player and WD TV HD Media Player are all workable with .m2ts files, and they also support Full HD resolutions up to 1080P in common. In order to reserve the HD audio and video quality of your BD movie, you can completely select "Copy"> "Directly Copy" to just get the .m2ts files as the original as long as your USB device has enough space to store the output files. If not, you can also consider converting BD to a HD video format to save space as well as keep HD quality of the source file.

Well, hope the above contents are helpful.

BD-HP21U problems playing discs

You have inadvertently downloaded the US (or other region) version of the firmware. Unfortunately if you try and download the UK version the HP21 just tells you you have already installed it. I was told mine the only way to reset it is for it to be sent to Sharp or you can wait for a new firmware update.
