Corrupt .rtf file in Word 2010

Hello everyone, Last night, my computer rebooted itself unexpectedly while I was accessing a Word document. I was constantly saving the document, so I expected that it would come back up when the computer rebooted. Every time I try to open it in Word, it says that the file is corrupt and cannot be read. I have tried the Open & Repair function. I have also tried the Extract Text from All Files function. When I did the latter, the document came up to about 1,000 pages worth of different codes. When I open it in WordPad, the most recent things I saved did not come up. I am absolutely sure that I saved what I was working on. Is there any way I can fix this corrupt file? It is a crucial part of an assignment.

Hi,
We can also try to search for the Word backup file, in Word 2010, please do the following:

Start Word 2010.

Click the File menu, and then click Open.

Locate the folder in which you last saved the file.

In the Files of type list (All Word documents), click All Files. The backup file usually has the name "Backup of" followed by the name of the missing file.

Click the backup file, and then click Open.

You can also refer to this kb below to find the missing content of the document, it's written for the missing documents issue, you can also try the methods: http://www.filerepairforum.com/forum/archives/archives-aa/winrar/536-rar-is-3x-larger-than-its-content

I was rescued by it:

RTF Repair Kit. A convenient and fast online RTF repair tool offering unprecedented quality of data recovery, a convenient user interface and great value for regular and professional users.

Unfortunately unless you had autosave enabled or you have an olerd version of the document you can open and update there is probably noting you can do. If the file was being written to when the computer crashed, and it has been corrupted there is no way to recover it. Current versions of MS Word produce compiled files that do not contain any plain text and although this provides for more security and efficiency it also renders files useless if they cannot be opened by the program.

There are a few companies that sell programs that attempt to recover corrupt MS Word 2010/2013 files but these programs can be expensive. You should try a Google search for "repair ms word files" and see what resources are available.

I am unable to get my laptop to work. It was fine last night but this morning I don't have access to my files.

Reboot and log on again. Could be your profile is corrupt, and it made you a new one for the time being. Also look in c:\documents and settings\username and look for your stuff there. If you see two folders in there with your username that sort of look alike, then that's what happened.
This could be caused by a failing hard drive, so back up your data when you do get back in.

Good luck! Hope this was helpful. Please leave a rating!
