Unless the TV has a proper on/off switch, when it's plugged in it's either in 'standby' or it's 'on' - those are your two choices!
Contrary to what we're being duped into believing, the energy consumption in standby is almost nothing, and you CERTAINLY won't see the difference in your leccy bills.
I have a remote control power strip that all my entertainment center is plugged into. It does save some power and every little bit does add up.
