In a dell laser printer (lp) 1700(n) there is a swinging arm in the top of the paper drawer with snall wheels on it. The arm is roughly 1 1/2 inches long and has 2 small rubber wheels on a small, motor driven stick at the end of the arm. The arm swings down from the roof of the paper tray and sits on the paper. Then, the wherls start to turn and push the paper towards the entrance to the rollers and imaging drums. The arm on my printer does NOT swing down, but does rotate the wheeks.

Our printer was offline for two years, wouldnt pick up paper needed to see if it worked, flipped the rollers and it works fine just a lot of build up from sitting though...

After you replace the imaging drum, you should reset the imaging drum's counter. To reset the counter, YOU MUST LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN AND THEN press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.

Call Dell. the 1700 has special reset instructions for resetting the drum count.

SOURCE: who can fix my printer from paper jamming?
If you mean that the print cycle starts, but the "Paper Jam" lights up at the point where the paper starts to enter the drum, here's what I found worked.
The rollers that feed the paper come down onto the clean sheets on a plastic, spring-loaded arm Those rollers sometimes get too slick after a lot of use and they won't push the paper up and into the drum -- they slip like worn tires.
Solution: slip the rubber "tires"off the plastic roller "wheels" and reverse them, inside-out. Put them back on the wheels and the new rubber surface will probably push the paper just fine.
To do this you have to turn the machine upside down and remove the paper tray. I would unplug the unit and remove the drum as well before trying this.
Good luck.
