You should be able to go into your printer preferences or properties settings by going to the "Printers & Devices" tab. If this is for Widows 8 or 8.1 I have not upgraded to either OS and have no clue as to their layout for access. In XP and 7 there is the option of changing your default settings from color/auto to black & white only. Make sure you hit the "APPLY" button to set it "OK" button doesn't always keep the settings locked in.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the input! This computer is a MAC OSX 10.6.3, I have reinstalled the HP 6380 software & completely reinstalled the operating system with no results. This version does not give the option to only print black. Thanks"

Ah MAC "the knife" OS strikes again. Sorry, I didn't know that was your OS. Let me check on this and see if that printer preference is hidden in there somewhere.

SOURCE: refilled cartridge not printing

Try to cartridge manually ,please follow the instructions :

# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not installed at this point.

1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than one swab.

# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap them correctly into the printer.

It sounds like you downloaded the PCL Universal Driver. Try the full solution driver or the PostScript Universal Driver. Both allow color prints.

I only use black in for my printed copies. Is it necessary to have ink in the color cartridge in order to print

Hello, Diane -

I would need to know the make and model of your printer to provide you with a definitive answer.

That being said, most black & white & color printers made and sold these days use the color inks along with the black ink to print black and gray tones. So . . .

Yes, you will need ink in the color cartridges as well as the black in to print.

Best wishes.

The ink-jets that shoot the ink onto the paper are CLOGGED.
Launch the HP Printing Assistant software, and run a "print-head-cleaning" cycle (or 2 or 3 cycles),
to try to unclog the ink-jets.

Photo black ink runs out b4 black on HP Photosmart C6380 printer

The black ink cartridge is larger than the photo black cartridge and black is used in photos to make the darker colors. Black text takes much less ink per page.

My hp Color Laserjet 3550 Printer wont print black when it is out of color ink

The 3550 won't print in any color if any of the colors are out. You'll have to replace the color ink that's empty to get it to print.

In the future, if you're just printing black and white, you can select "Print in Grayscale" from the print properties to just use the black ink cartridge, which will help the color cartridges to last longer.

Even though all my print cartridges are full my hp c6380 printer prints out pictures that are not colored properly. It seems to print as if the cyan cartridge is empty but that is not the case. Any idea...

Open the "HP Toolbox" software (it was installed from the CD-ROM that came with the printer).

Run the "Print-Head-Cleaning" cycle -- some of the ink-jets are clogged, and thus no ink of that colour is being jetted onto the paper.

HP Deskjet 990cxi Printer NOT printing B/W, only red.

To customer of HP deskjet 990cki: I purchased the HP photosmart Plus B209 ~ January 2010. 3 months into, I have learned that when the color ink that you don't use evaporates, the black ink will not work at all, no matter what you adjust or clean. To make it work you have to purchase more color ink...on & on & on..$$$$. Neither HP nor Best Buy will refund my investment. Spoken with HP customer service reps. in the Philippines & Canada both being outside of the US. NO customer satisfaction. No refunds. I suggest Boycotting both corps.

Kodak ESP 5 runs out of ink after about 40 pages of standard text black & white documents. Also the color ink level is dropping, but no color is being used (the printer is set for black & white...

As far as the quantity of black & white - to get more out of it - go to start menu.. Click on on settings,, then printers,, Right click on the ESP 5,, click on printing preferences,, then clcik on draft,, then click on (at the top) advanced,, click on black & white.. Then click on apply then ok..
Now - every time you print it will be in this mode.. If you want to print in color - you will have to choose that each time..
For you black & white docs - this will print faster & use allot less ink..
As far as your color issue & puddling - It could be the printer head.. If it is new enough - call Kodak & maybe get a replacement.. If to old - maybe keep the color cartrige out and caped with the plastic caps until you need to print color.. Snap it in & out as needed..
I hope this helped..
