Is you computer slow when using software offline? If so, it is either AOL or your internet. Don't judge the speed strictly by going to AOL. Go to Speakeasy Speed Test and test your internet speed. If that shows your internet is running at the speed you are paying for, it si AOL having trouble. You don't say which browser you are using, but most browsers have an option to block pop-ups. Make sure it is on.
Run a virus scan on your PC to see if it is infected. Also defrag your hard drive to speed it up some.

SOURCE: Computer runs slow

Hey I face the same problem too! It's really irritating. When it gets real bad, what I do is just run a computer check up. That usually does the trick in solving all these issues. You might want to give it a try too, i believe its free at http://www.pcaholic.com.

SOURCE: My DSL is Too Slow, could it involve my phone lines?

Hello there.

It sounds like your computer might be infected with something, you should not be getting popups in this day and age :)

I would suggest 2 things, firstly you can avoid most of the problems on the Internet by using a safer web browser, either Firefox or Opera is much safer than using the included browser Internet Explorer6/7.

The second thing would be to run an online virus, trojan, spyware scanner such as housecall . This runs in your web browser and does not conflict with any antivirus installed on the computer, let it scan your computer and when its done it should remove anything found.

Doing this and using another web browser should speed up your computer which in turn should speed up your internet hopefully.

In firefox you can even install a plugin call 'adblock filter updater' which not only blocks adverts but stops them from even loading, this should speed up your connection some.

Try this and let us know.
Hope this helps.

Running slow pop ups all the time

You more than likely have an infection. The problem is, removing an infection is a lot easier said than done. While your computer is running, so is the virus. And it would be like attempting to delete a picture, while you're looking at the picture. The computer will yell at you and tell you the file is in use. There are tons of guides on the internet as to how to easily remove a virus, but I will give you the short of it. If you don't have any antivirus active protection; Microsoft Security Essentials is free and pretty good. Download and install that. MalwareBytes and Spybot S&D (Search and destroy) are both fantastic at virus removal, but don't have active protection.
Download the three of these, install them, then restart your computer. As it is turning on, press F8 and then navigate to Safe Mode. Run all three scanners (not at the same time, and you might have to restart in between) and your computer should be much better off if this was the case. If this doesn't do much for your situation, at least you now have active antivirus protection.
Lastly you need to be VERY careful about the popups. Many of them advertise that your computer is infected and to buy "their" antivirus software. The problem is, that software is a scam and you will lose your money. And remember when you have big issues like running slow with popups all the time, you can always take it to a local tech shop if you're not comfortable with doing the work yourself. However this kind of repair can cost up to about $200.

AOL FINALLY listed the way to remove this major annoyance.
And it actually WORKS.

Delete the SpyZapper components manually. Log in to your computer using the administrator username and password, and then search and delete the following files:

Belkin wireless G+ usb adapter

AOL has been and will always have problem (had to do repairs on AOL computers since 1994)

If you have a DSL or Cable connection why pay again for AOL? That means you are paying twice for the same internet connection - and AOL causes lots of problems.

For AOL problems, it is best to contact AOL.

My new desktop is so slow..........I want to throw it in the trash. (bought 6 weeks ago from Tiger direct.ca) Do you have a solution?

There can be a number of things that are slowing your computer down. First queston is, are you talking about it not running fast on the internet of in general running slow. I am going to take it your talking about it running slow over all. With new computers they (the maf.) but a lot of unecssary software in the "Start "", that really slows down the computer. I am going to tell you how to take care of this problem.

Go to Start-Run, when the winodw pops up type MSCONFIG (it looks like a lot of stuff, but's it only a teddy bear), go to the START UP TAB. You will see check markes next to all the software that is starting u and using a lot of system memory. Yo simple uncheck the ones you do not want to run at startup, now when you uncheck these the program will still run, but only when you tell it to,

When you have selected what programs you want to or do not want to run, Click on APPLY and then OK. The computr will restart and should begin to run faster.

When you have completed this, please let me know how it's working, and if still slower than you think it should be, then we will go to the nextstep.
