It is usually located right next to the high-voltage capacitor. BE CAREFUL! YOU ARE TREADING IN VERY DANGEROUS TERRITORY! MAKE SURE THE MICROWAVE OVEN IS UNPLUGGED AND WAIT 5 OR MORE MINUTES BEFORE YOU GO POKING AROUND IN THERE. Note: In some older microwave ovens, those with a vertically-mounted squirrel-cage cooling fan, the HV diode was located inside the fan housing.

Curious, but did you know the diode was shorted without measuring it before you ordered the new one? I hope that's the problem.

In any case, there should also be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

It usually has a perspective view drawing showing the relative locations of the components (parts layout).

If you don't have your tech sheet, you can find it online here and look on pages 3 & 4.

The diode (rectifier) is connected to one terminal of the high voltage capacitor and the other end goes to the chassis for ground.

It is located behind the magnetron in the back of the unit. You'll probably have to take the oven down from the wall to get to it safely.

Whirlpool customer service is here and you can also enter your model number on that page to download your owner's manual, installation instructions, etc.

Please read & heed the safety info in the tech sheet.

Whirlpool microwave was not heating and we replaced the diode and now it will not stay on

Usual failures of a microwave are the diode, the high voltage capacitor and lastly, the magnetron itself. These are all HIGH voltage components. You really need to be careful when working on them.

Whirlpool microwave makes loud buzzing noise

When your microwave oven won't cook your food, and, you hear a loud buzzing sound, it’s normally caused by a faulty (a) diode (b) high-voltage capacitor (b) magnetron.
The diode would be the most likely culprit of the three components. It’s also by far the cheapest!

Whirlpool oven

Hi, there are three issues that will cause a no heat situation in a microwave. these issue are a failed Magnetron, busted cut-off fuse and, failed diode.

I recommend checking all these area that are located inside the microwave for faults.

The most common issue will be a failed Magnetron.

The diode and, fuse will be located on the noise filter assembly.
