That message is displayed when the camera senses no light. You may have a stuck iris on the camera. A good tech can pull the stuck iris and freee it up, but it's very easy to damage the camera, so I wouldn't recommend a consumer trying to do it.

This may sound crazy but I fixed mine by putting it in the microwave for 8 seconds along side of a shallow dish with about 1 tsp. of Hot Sauce!

not to be flippant, but ditch Vista and install XP - camcorder support in Vista, in my experience of it, is terrible.
