If your garbage disposal won't run you may need to reset the garbage disposal using the RED overload protector button on the bottom. ... Turn on a cold stream of water and turn the disposal switch to "ON" position, the disposal should now run again. How to Reset Garbage Disposal InSinkErator
Use the wrench provided and turn disposer counterclockwise wise (of course the power is off.. do not repair it is better to replace with a new unit. Use 1/2 Hp minimum. Available at HD or Lowe's
To improve the performance and longivity of your garbage disposal you should clean the iniside of the machine monthly. Gunk builds up inside of the disposal things suchas, grease, dirt, peels, etc... The following is extreemely effective in removing all types of material from your disposal and will also leave it smelling great.
FIRST STEP. GRAB (2) ICE CUBE TRAYS FORM THE FREZER.
CRACK THE CUBES FROM THE TRAYS AND PUT 6 TO 8 CUBES INSIDE THE DISPOSAL (THE DISPOSAL SHOULD BE OFF WHEN YOU ARE PUTTING THE ICE CUBES IN).
AFTER PUTTING 6 TO 8 CUBES IN THE DISPOSAL TURN THE UNIT ON AND RUN TILL THE CUBES ARE GONE. REPEAT THIS UNTIL BOTH TRAYS OF CUBES ARE USED UP.
AFTER THE ICE CUBES ARE GONE RUN THE DISPOSAL WITH HOT WATER RUNNING THROUGH IT FOR ABOUT HALF A MINUTE.
AFTER RUNNING THE HOT WATER THROUGH THE DISPOSAL PEEL A LEMON. DISCARD THE PEEL IN THE TRASH. PLACE THE WHOLE PEELED LEMON IN THE DISPOSAL WITH THE DISPOSAL TURNED OFF. START RUNNING HOT WATER AGAIN AND TURN ON THE DISPOSAL. RUN THE DISPOSAL UNTIL THE LEMON IS GONE. TURN OFF THE HOT WATER AND RUN COLD WATER THROUGH THE DISPOSAL FOR A FEW SECONDS AND TURN OFF.
The inside of your disposal is now sparkling clean and smelling good. If you use your disposal a lot do this cleaning once a month. If you don't use your disposal much do it every 3 months. Your disposal will work and smell much better. THANK YOU.

Sounds like the disposal drain is clogged. Under the sink, put bucket under plumbing, take a photo of parts, remove 2 nuts on p-trap and trap falls loose. Run water and disposal and see if disposal drains correctly. If disposal is still clogged, remove tailpiece on side of disposal to access the disposal cutter chamber. The tailpiece is sealed against the disposal with rubber washer. Make sure washer is clean when putting tailpiece back. If necessary, use coat hanger to reach into disposal. Clean out trap and reassemble tubular drain using photos to help assist where each part goes. I use white teflon joint compound on each joint and washer when reassembling tubular joints to make sure they seal first time.
Use a broomstick handle to see if disposal blades rotate freely If blades are stuck, use broomstick to wedge blades free.
If blades rotate freely, and motor does not turn on, then garbage disposal is broken. Disposal mechanism cannot be disassembled for repairs. Disposal will need to be replaced at some point.
I wrote tips for replacing disposal from days when I worked apartment maintenance.
Here are basic disposal parts: 1) Sink basket that connects to sink and is held with 3 screws from below. 2) Disposal body which connects to sink basket using metal ring. 3) Rubber washer between disposal and sink basket. 4) Dishwasher connection at upper part of disposal with a hose. 5) Electric wire from disposal switch connects to disposal near red reset button. 6) Tubular drain pipe connection on side of disposal
In apartment maintenance, we replaced disposal with same size and brand disposal. That way we didn't have to change out sink basket or move pipes around under the sink. How to: Disconnect 2 nuts on p-trap and trap falls loose. Using hammer and screwdriver, rotate steel connector disk that holds disposal to sink basket, and disposal comes off. Before installing new disposal. Attach electric wire to new disposal, black wire to black and white to white, and push in red reset button. Attach dishwasher tube to new disposal. Knock out plug inside dishwasher opening. Lift new disposal up into place, and attach to old sink basket. There is a rubber washer between disposal and sink basket, Use new washer. Connector ring catches at three points, all three have to connect. You can use bottle jack to lift disposal if you have problem. Re-assemble tubular pipe.
Image shows direction for connecting new disposal.
If this is your home, you want new sink basket that comes with new disposal because it looks shiny and new. Buy a tub of plumbers putty also. Remove 3 screws that hold sink basket, remove basket and clean sink opening. Put finger-size roll of plumbers putty around sink opening, and then push new strainer basket into plumbers putty. Tighten basket from below, wipe away excess putty around sink opening. Install new disposal as described above.
Tips for tubular pipes: When taking apart tubular pipes, start at p-trap and take apart as few pieces as needed to do job. On image above, loosen both upper and lower nuts, trap falls loose, and then work on disposal. Any tubular drain pipe that gets moved while working under sink needs to be disassembled, cleaned and re-assembled. Metal pipes have rubber washer >> always use new rubber washers. Plastic pipes have plastic washers > plastic washers can be cleaned and re-used. Plastic washers have flat side that goes toward nut, tapered side away from nut.
When reassembling tubular pipe, we use rectorseal on washers and joints. Always slap a good amount all around washer just before pushing washer in place and attaching nut. Rectorseal will ensure tubular drain pipes won't leak.

Garbage disposals can get noisy and sound like they're eating spoons instead of banana peel. You can put vacuum hose in sink opening and see if something is in there. As long as disposal disk rotates freely, and disposal is not shaking around and causing pipes to leak, then you can use it until it dies. Otherwise, the bearing is probably rusted, or something is loose. Disposals rust out and eventually freeze, or the motor slows down and overheats, or they rust a hole and water leaks under sink.

If this draining most of the water but not all of it, This could very well be the drain hose is clogged or getting that way. This will sometimes be in the hose itself and you can clear this by unhooking it from the carbage disposal and blowing through it. The caseing on your disposal is aluniumn and will corode easly in damp and dirty situations. Right place right time. This is the best bet for your problem, while you have your hose off the disposal chech where it hooks to the unit it is a natural restriction and will collect junk and start to corrode. Useing a tooth pick or bamboo skuer dig around in there and make sure it is clear, But be very careful of the caseing on your desposal, depending on age if this is the problem then the caseing is getting tired as well and can break very easly. so be careful. I hope this helps. Good luck
Try placing the allen wrench into the socket on the underside of the disposer and working it back and forth, then trying it electrically. The blades can appear to be free, even with a jam. The moving of the inner workings with the allen wrench should free it all up. Flush the disposer with a potful of ice and water when it turns freely.
