If the PC shut down normally in recent past, try a system restore point for the most recent date the PC operated normally. Just go into the Safe Mode and select the restore option, then select restore point.

Before shutting down your system click on any programs still running and shut them down. This will cut the time for normal shut down to take place.

You could also run a hard drive diagnostic to see if it has any errors. There might be some if you don't let the computer shut down itself. Restarting can also cause the programs to become corrupt, if they didn't shut down right. Running a defrag on the drive will also help it shut down quicker.
Look on the net also for information on getting your PC to shut down quicker.

SOURCE: Computer start up problem

Capture the message that is displayed on the BSOD. There will be a bunch of numbers that will tell you what is wrong. I would open the side and re-seat the RAM and do a general cleaning of the fans.
Good luck!

U might try to repair the system but with that message it seems there may be something wrong with your hard drive. Use a cd diagnostic disk to check out the drive to confirm.

I open my laptop up and all that appears is the desktop background...nothing else. How do I get it going?

Force a restart... Unplug any power and pop the battery out. Give it a minute, then pop battey back in, and power wire if needed.. Press power on buttn. Should start up. It may give a black text screen with start up options saying shut down wrong.. Just use Normal Start up.

It is running very slowly, and I often get a white screen. I have defragged and optimized but it doesn't seem to help.

Hi there !!

I can understand your issue. When you say your computer is running slow it means many of the programs running in the background. Those unwanted programs needs to be stopped. I can understand that you ran de-fragmentation but that doesn't help you. Normally de-fragmentation is for "physically organizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together".

Kindly follow the steps

Click on Start->Run->msconfig.
Which will take you to System Configuration Utility.

Click on Startup->Disable startup items.
Click on Apply and Close.
Restart your computer.

Next step run disk cleanup utility.
To do that click on start->run->cleanmgr.

Run Clean up utility for all the drives.

Finally restart the computer and try it

That should work and revert if you have any clarifications.

My computer shuts down acer programs wont run

If your computer has preinstalled recovery options:

1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
Click the Start button getopencontent.aspx?assetid=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml, click the arrow next to the Lock button getopencontent.aspx?assetid=eb058ccf-b21e-4dfe-9bb7-1ad6c83b705c&documentset=en-us&renderkey=xml, and then click Restart.
2. Do one of the following:
• If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
• If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to repair, and then press and hold F8.
3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press ENTER. (If Repair your computer is not listed as an option, then your computer does not include the System Recovery Options menu as a preinstalled recovery option.)
4. Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.
5. Select a user name and enter the password, and then click OK.
6. On the System Recovery Options menu, click a tool to open it.

Lcd screen broke external monitor wont work

Sounds like you resolution is too high or vista doesn't recognise your driver.

Try starting in Safe Mode by powering up your PC and tapping the F8 key until you see a menu. Select Safe Mode from the menu. Once in safe mode change the resolution to 800x600 then restart in normal mode.

If that doesn't work then download and install the correct drivers for your display card here;

ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_3680/

Once downloaded, you may need to install it in safe made once again.

Thanks
