My battery was disconnected for a new starter motor to be fitted - now it won't tune in. CD works but radio just hisses? I've checked aerial connections which seem OK. Radio lights up and looks like it should work but no sound - just hissing

Somehow your antenna has become disconnected. Check the back of the stereo and look at the ANT connection. Remove it and test continuity from the center to the outside antenna. Chassis is ground and most likely will not have a problem.

I have a 1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.5 litre petrol with a serious aerial problem - which I have posted but can't update.

Question edited for clarity. Make as well as model, and spelling of 'aerial'.
Question moved from Ariel Cars to Isuzu Trooper.

Your problem will be the aerial motor drawing power. Just have it replaced at a car radio fitting shop.

There is no fuse covering it, so it is a case of following the wire back.

$60 for the part.

How so i pick station on my Radio Shack police scanner?

I have never used a scanner of that type but I have seen them in use and know the principle of operation.

If you are certain the radio is working and have checked with the instruction manual that you are operating it the correct way with any squelch control turned down and the volume turned up there should be a loud hissing from the speaker indicating the radio is ready to receive as soon as it is either tuned to the specific frequency of a station by direct entry or by scanning one or more bands of frequencies.

If there is no hissing noise it is possible the audio output is faulty or the aerial is not connected or the radio is otherwise faulty.

If the hissing noise is present and powerful and still nothing is being received it is possible there is nothing to receive or a more powerful aerial is needed.
It is worth noting many scanners available in the past tended to scan bands of frequencies in the upper and lower vhf bands where the aircraft, marine and emergency services radios operated. Since those days many of those services have moved their communications into the UHF bands leaving the vhf bands relatively empty.

Radio power is on but no sound coming from speakers/radio on 2005 Acura MDX. Sound works with CD's

Turn on the radio and increase the volume if you can hear a hiss through the speakers, chance is the aerial/antenna connection is not hooked up correctly. Another way to check is try tuning to an AM station if you get a signal on AM but not FM then it is The antenna. You may have to remove the radio to get at the connection.

Put the radio in my truck about 4 months ago, worked great. the truck sat for months because it was broke, now i get it fixed, put the face on my radio and everything is on, my radio, my amp is running but...

Turn the volume up to the highest level.

Can you hear a hiss or static?

NO...usually means speakers are disconnected..often loose socket at rear of radio or broken wiring

YES...Hiss means either blown speaker, faulty radio or faulty aerial.

If you have tape or CD as well , this will prove whether it is the aerial or not.

HISS with CD or tape playing means faulty radio or speakers

WORKING OK with CD or tape means faulty aerial
