The stitch length lever on some machines will back stitch when the lever is in the uppermost position. Bring the lever down to an appropriate stitch length and your machine should stitch forward.

Check the reverse lever.
Most probably it's stucked in, the last time you used it.

SOURCE: backward stitching

Knowing which kind of machine you have helps alot. Just guessing but maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck and needs some oil in it to free it up. Or the buttonhole mechanism is stuck in reverse part of it.
Probably you should have it looked at.

Sounds like you may have a blockage somewhere in the bobbin area that needs cleaning as this is normally what happens when it gets jammed. Reverse sewing can sometimes cause jams. Remove bobbin area and reassemble.

Try hitting the reverse button twice in quick succession. SOME machines have a permanent reverse feature. Also check your manual for this feature.

My machine will only sew backwards while holdingdown the reverse slot

You didn't show which brand or model sewing machine you have, but most sewing machines are spring loaded and will only reverse when holding down the reverse lever.
