Black screen when in picture mode cant take pictures

When I turn the camera on to take a picture, the screen appears black. When I press the picture button, the flash works, camera clicks like it has taken a pic but no pic appears on the screen & screen remains blank. I can view old photos on the memory card that were taken previously but not new photos. Everything else seems to work fine...all menu items and such. Will this be an easy fix? Or should I just buy a new camera?

I have the identical problem. Camera not used for some time. Charged battery. All menus work, old pictures retrievable but black screen and black pictures when I shoot.

The 5400 screen is black, but the menus work. I can view pictures on the memory card. The flash works, but no picture just black.

I have charged the battery, reset the camera to factory specs in the setup menu. The problem still persist.

when i click for taking a pic,
the camera itself changes the mode without taking the picture.

turn on camera, there is a black screen and it takes a black picture. Then when I take a second picture the screen reappars as normal and takes a normal picture.

PER007 was correct on the service advisory repair direct from Nikon.

Visit: http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/launch_all.html

Fill out the forms and send in your camera and they will fix your unit. Mine works now and I had the black LCD issue as the above have.

Hope this helps!

Nikon has a service advisory: Please read below.

Service advisory - Nikon 1.07 Service Advisory: COOLPIX 3500, 4500, 5000 and 5400 digital cameras Certain electronic image components in Nikon COOLPIX 3500, COOLPIX 4500, COOLPIX 5000 and COOLPIX 5400 digital cameras may, on rare occasions, fail. Failure is most likely to occur when the camera is used in extreme conditions.
According to Nkon, look for the following symptoms:

  • images exhibit a strong pink or green tint.
  • images are totally black.
  • images contain defects. They may appear corrupted, contain vertical lines or bands, contain horizontal lines or bands or images contain noise.
If a faulty component is discovered, Nikon will replace it free of charge, even if your warranty has already expired. Contact Nikon in your country for more information.

Black screen on canon a 550

Sounds like you accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on or off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder, just like you've been doing. To turn the screen back on, press the button once more.

Black screen while shooting, but still taking pictures not black

Nonononooooo fotomohamed, he can review just taken pictures on the LCD. The screen is working.

Actually, it sounds like you just accidentally pressed the DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save batteries (you would then use optical viewfinder). Just press it once and it should turn back on.

Memory Error appears on screen

Just had this problem myself. What you do is press the Mode button twice until it shows a black background with the words Memory Error on top of it (this should be the picture preview mode). Then press the Menu button and press the 4-way button right to enter the Setup Menu. Go down and Format the camera and that will fix it.

Good luck.

Canon A700 black screen when i want to take a picture

Did you accidentally press the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera? This button manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. Pictures will still appear momentarily when shot.

Screen black in all lighting. Icons and menu show and can view photos already on card, but screen black in all modes. Can take picture, but it is also black. Lens cover is open. Nikon Coolpix 4600. Thanks...

Hello, I went and researched a few points in the manual and hope this helps to some extent. If this doesn't help, try resetting your camera by removing the batteries for 30 seconds, then reinstalling them and turning on the camera again.
Monitor is blank:
• Camera is off.
• Batteries are not correctly inserted or battery-chamber
cover is not properly latched.
• Batteries are exhausted.
• EH-62B AC adapter (available separately) is not properly
connected.
• Camera is in sleep mode. Press shutter-release button
halfway.
• Monitor is off.
• USB cable is connected.
• AV/Video cable is connected

No picture is taken when shutter release button is pressed:

• Camera is in playback mode.
• Batteries are exhausted.
• Red (!) lamp flickers: flash is charging.
• Green (AF) lamp flickers: camera unable to focus.
• Message "CARD IS NOT FORMATTED" appears in
monitor: memory card is not formatted for use in your
camera.
• Message "OUT OF MEMORY" appears in monitor:
insufficient memory to record picture at current Image
mode setting.

CAMERA TURNS OFF WHEN IN PICTURE OR VIDEO MODE

Does the camera turn off or does the screen go black? if the screen goes black but the power lamp stays green then the screen is just turned off (power save mode), If it’s just the screen to turn on the LCD. There are 3 buttons just to the right of the screen, press the center button.

Turn on camera but the lcd sceen is black

Have you checked the display mode you're in? If you have the display set to off (to save power) and also the picture review time set to off, then you'll just see a black screen. Try pressing the 'Disp.' button below the screen when the camera is on - it should cycle through different settings with each press: Off, On, On with picture info. Similarly, in the playback mode this will show you more or less info about the picture you are viewing.

Even if the display is switched off, if you have your 'review' option in the menu set to anything other than Off (i.e. 2 seconds), then you should see the picture you've taken appear on the screen straight after taking it.

If it's not that, then I don't know the answer....

Black bars in the picture

For Models: CC4352, CC4362, CC4393. Your camcorder has a wide format recording mode that lets you make recordings compatible with the 16x9 format. When 16x9 is activated, the camcorder records black bars at the top and bottom of the picture to produce the wide-screen (movie) effect. This is also known as "letterbox" recording. Do not use this mode unless you have a compatible 16x9 TV. When played on a regular TV, black bars appear on the screen. If the 16x9 feature is activated on your camcorder and you want to turn it off, press REC/PAUSE to pause recording, and repeatedly press DIGITAL EFFECTS until no digital effects display appears.
