Loud clicking noise - wont agitate or spin

Had same problem as this guy:
My Kenmore 70 series washer will not agitate or spin. It makes a loud clicking noise instead of begin the agitate or spin cycle. It will fill and drain without a problem. I was washing sheets and a blanket when this started. I even tried it empty to see if it was an overload.

Was washing clothes and heard loud grinding/hum- opened top and noticed agitator barely moving. Tub will fill and empty/ but does not "spin" clothes as agitator seems to be stuck?

It took a repair man who knew what he was doing all of 30 minutes to fix it - worn out broken plastic coupler, he replaced with metal one. Service call plus labor plus minor part charge - still better than having to replace or do without!

I have the same problem with my 80 series. How do you get to this coupler to replace it?

I replaced the coupler and now its spins but makes a load clicking noise over and over with a smell of something burning. The transmission?

I had the same clicking noise. Turned out to be the coupling between the motor and transmission. A $15 plus 1 hour labor fix

Series 70 fills wit water stops then makes a slight buzzing sound

The electric motor my have failed or a part called a capacitor could be the problem? The capacitor is part of the starting circuit of the electric motor, if this fails the motor will not start therefore the washing machine won't spin or agitate.

Loud grinding motor protesting humming w/no spinning or agitating

The drum/agitator bearings are bad I believe, or the gearbox has been damaged. This is an expensive repair. I would strongly consider buying a new washer. This is a great time to buy appliances since the stores are really competing, and the prices are at their lowest.

Kenmore Washing Machine 70 series

You most likely have a broken coupler between the motor and gearcase.
You can buy the part for about $10 or have someone come out and replace it for about $150-200.
If you will post the complete model number from the the washer so I can see which style cabinet you have, I will try to walk you through the repair. It isn't very complicated if you are handy with home repairs.
With the age of the machine it probably just needs a coupler, but it could also have a problem in the transmission or basket drive that has caused the failure.
