You just put the food in the microwave and the dish surface heats up as well as the food. Microwave heating work by heating the water molecules in the food. The dish contains a metallic content on the base which heats up. You can also preheat the dish and drop food into it so it starts sizzling straight away.
I have never seen a microwave that doesn't burn popcorn if you use the "popcorn" button. Why the manufacturers keep putting them on I'll never understand. There's nothing you can do change the presets on an oven since they are built into the controller. Instead of relying on the oven, you should follw the directions on the bag. These tell you to use high power, stay by the oven and stop the cooking when the time between pops drops to 1 or 2 seconds. Stored heat will continue to pop kernels for a bit, and you won't cremate your popcorn. You'll also avoid the possibility of the bag catching fire and damaging the oven, which I have seen several times. Finally, don't expect 100% of the kernels to pop. There wil always be a few duds, and extending the cooking time just results in burned popcorn.
Unfortunately, it sounds like there may be a magnatron problem. If this is the case the unit will need professional repair.
If you are confident enough to open the unit and understand how to ground and discharge the main capacitor which will hold a charge even after disconnecting the unit from the mains, then you can check the internal fuse which sits at the top of the oven internally.
Unplug the Micro for about 5 minutes and plug it back in this will reset the board,it may have picked up interference from other electronics. If the issue continues have a technician look at it.
Disconnect the power for 30 seconds. After restoring power, do not set the clock.
If your model has an ON/OFF clock display, you can choose not to have the time displayed.
To choose this option, press the 0 pad for about three seconds. To Turn the display back on, press the 0 again.
Touch the clock pad. Enter in the correct time of day by touching the numbers in sequence. Touch the clock pad again.
