HS represents a problem with the temperature being too high. (maximum return water temp exceeded). this can be caused by a restriction in the plumbing system. i have that problem when i start my pool after a cold night. the water temperature rises too fast and the heater protects itself by flashing that code and turning off. reset the power to unit and it should work ok. if not, you may have to dig deeper as to why this code is being generated

Could the Error code be HS? That is high temperature limit. Perhaps you' don't have enough flow, allowing the heater to heat the water to a temperature higher, than the thermostat setting. Make sure your bypass valve is closed, allowing full flow through the heater. Check your filter pressure differential , and skimmer baskets.
You didn't give your model number, and there are many models. You can go the Hayward website below and select your exact model number and download the manual. The manual will explain each error code.

Remove the sheet metal covers (top and bottom) on the side of the heater where the pipes come into the heater. It screws into the header just behind the cover. Then just follow the wires back to the front of the heater and find where they plug in to replace the unit. This will be behind the top cover on the front.
SOURCE: I have a new Hayward
A 100k btus burns roughly 1 gallon of propane per hour. A400k btu heater burns approximately 4 gallons (actual is somewhere between 4 - 4.18 gallons per hour.) That's assuming that the heateris running non stop during this time period. I know your question was fairly simple and disp notrequire a whole lot of information but we appreciate you giving us somefeedback! The Ugly Pool Guy

I have this model heater. Here's one idea - with the power shut off off, unscrew the control panel screws and inspect the circuit boards and connections. Mine once got some drops of water inside and it left a mineral residue behind that was conducting between two wires on the board. It did not damage the board, but it made the heater show an error code and the buttons didn't work. I cleaned up the white residue with a pencil eraser and used silicone to seal the control panel edge and block future leaks. It worked like a charm. Good luck!
