Sounds like you have a dead short. Check the outlets for any debris, metal or copper. Check the backside if the outlet for anything grounding onto the unit. The breaker is tripping to protect the outlet and anything plugged into it. The fire shooting out of the outlet is an arc flash caused by the dead short. You can also try disconnecting and replacing the outlet . If the problem persists, disconnect the starter and try to bench test it with a multimeter. I hope this helps. Good luck.

How to test portable generator stator for short in windings

You will need what the factory resistances valuea re supposed to be, cold. Then use a high quality ohm meter with 3 decimal places, disconenct all wires off the stator. Check each wire with a meter to the ground frame, if there is any value, stator is shorted. Then check between stator wires ie L1 L2 and compare resistance value with factory values.

Neighbor has a Briggs & Stratton Elite Series 5550 generator. How do you remove the generator from the engine. Need to repair oil capacity switch inside.

Hello; The Briggs engine front case is shaped to accommodate the internal mounting of the Alternator section. A service manual for this model would be very helpful. I believe you need to dismantle the back of the Alternator where the outlets are and then the outer case with the stator windings in it. This will leave the rotor ( the long shaft with windings on it ) which will be attached to the output shaft of the engine by some coupling device the you must dismantle. John

Every tme I plug in an extenson cord the circuit breaker trips.

Try a different cord and see if it works ok. If the circuit breaker trips without anything plugged into the extension cord then the chances are that there is a short in the socket of the cord or it is wired incorrectly.

I have a 5550 generator and all the sudden the power outlets stopped working. I pressed the reset buttons and nothing. I hooked my electrical device to another generator and it works. What is the problem...

Hello, it sounds like either you have a voltage regulator failure, the rotating field coil is shorted or opened, or the exciter windings have failed. No easy answer because there are a number of issues here as you can see. Depending on how old the unit is you might have warranty. I would suggest you take it to a generac service center to have it checked out. I have 30 years experience with generac units. If it is a voltage regulator issue, (this can be expensive) you can get a jobber regulator. This link is for a good generic substitute. http://www.mcphersoncontrols.com/html/mcp_products/voltage_regulators/MTS63-4.html
I have used this regulator on 4000 watt to 50 kw units successfully. If it is a winding, then to rewind the stator part of the generator is expensive and a new generator is cheaper.

Just bought a generator 5000/6250 style but my husband can't pull the recoil handle. i think it's stuck so we can't test the generator. the unit was shipped from california to the philippines. pls advice...

Try removing the spark plug and rotating the engine by hand.
It could be just a little corroded from shipment over the ocean.
But once you have it loosened up and the oil circulated, it should start much easier.
Make sure it has oil in it, because sometimes they drain the oil before shipping.
You could also have someone else try the starter rope. A new engine can be hard to start.

What do i do if my breakers kicking out???

Find out why there is too much of a load connected. You did not mention if it was doing the breaker kicking off routine with our without load. If it is doing it without a load you have a short in the control panel somewhere. Remove all of the mounting screws for the control panel, tip it out and you will see a short....

If you don't see a short there then the umbilical to the armature / stator is grounded. and you will probably have to remove the end cap of the generator to find the ground.

If the battery charge breaker is tripping the battery is bad....i.e no water or... internal short. Disconnect the battery and see if the breaker no longer trips.

Thanks for using FixYa!
