Go to settings & find the relevant place for updating to ios 6. You may not get the option for ios 6 though as the iphone 4 can use ios 7. If however you have an iphone 4S you can use ios 8

If you are not on AT&T then you need to fix your APN settings to whatever ur carrier is

SOURCE: I have an older iPhone 3g with ios 2.1 and it will not update!

Download the latest ios on the net and also download snowbreeze.Input the ios in snowbreeze.You will then get a new custom firmware created by snowbreeze.You need to put your iphone 3G into Pawned DFU mode using iRecovery or Redsnow.In iTunes,on the "Restore" button, press SHIFT+click on mouse cursor and locate the custom firmware.Then you are good to go.If you get any iTunes errors,look on the net for its solution or you can ask me,

depends on the model of iPhone you have:
iOS 6 is possible only on iPhone 3GS / 4 / 4S / 5
iPhone 1 / 2 / 3 are too slow for iOS 6
