This same thing happened to me. I was playing fantastic contraption and my ipod screen just went black and wouldnt turn back on. When I plugged it in to a charger, it made that charging noise, but wouldnt turn on. SOLUTION: try holding in the sleep/wake(power) button, and the home button at the same time for about 15 seconds or until you see the white apple logo. That worked for me, hope you get it fixed.

You must have bought a new iPod!
The screen is simply telling you to connect your iPod to your computer. (You should have iTunes already installed, if not you can download it, and install it for free from the Apple website).
Once it is connected, iTunes will pop up, and the rest of the set up will be simple!
is it charged? if so hold the power button and the home button at the same time for 10 seconds. it should turn on. if it doesnt hook it up to your computer or a wall charger and see if it turns on
Restoring it will not fix this problem. What you need to do is force it into recovery mode. Click the link and it will show you how. This happened to me while I was in a foreign country... I can feel your pain. This works! http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Try resetting it while it is connected.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If you have not already tried, I would also try the other ports on the computer.
Have you tried resetting it? Press the center (Select) button and the Menu button at the same time and hold for at least 10 seconds or until you see it reset.
try connecting to another computer that has itunes. this sounds like it wont solve anything but for some reason i get errors sometimes and as soon as i connect to another computer and then connect to the original i dont get errors from the original computer i was trying to use.
if that doesnt work, hold the power and home button untill your ipod shuts off then turn it back on. this sometimes helps as a sort of reset for your ipod without losing any of your music or etc.
hope this helped!
