To replace spindle bearings: Remove deck and either rest on two saw horses or similar mounts, or stand on its side and fix to make safe and secure. Photograph the belt layout and also the grease nipple so you can easily refit. The object is to access the top and bottom of the spindle. Remove cutting blade. Remove pulley on top side. I reccomend that you also remove the spindle housing from the deck. You can remove bearings while still fitted but it is not so easy. Clean the shaft and remove any circlips or retaining nuts from spindle. Take the unit and clean shaft as clean as new. Use emery paper if necessary. Use light oil or CRC to lube the shaft to slide bearings off. Do not hold shaft in vise as this will cause deformation of the shaft surface and jam the bearing. Place lower side of housing on vise which should be open slightly more than bearing outer diameter. Take hardwood or industrial nylon [to protect the thread from bruising,] after refitting nut on shaft thread, and ensuring there is space between nut and bearing, tap down firmly with hammer. The shaft will move more easily after the initial freeing up. When it moves easily remove nut and tap down with wood between hammer and thread end. To remove the top bearing use a wooden shaft, a broom handle is ideal. The replacement bearings should have no seals on the inside. Remove if necessary. Make sure to scrub clean both housing end and deck where the housing fits. Any rubbish there will cause lines in the mowing as it can tilt the blades. The thickness of paper can mean 3mm at the end of the blades!

SOURCE: How do I remove the spindle from the deck of a Craftsman mower.

Put your blade back on so you will have some backup on the nut. Wedge a piece of 2x4 between the blade and deck to hold the shaft while you take off the nut. You should do that before unbolting the spindle. If you are just replacing bearings, you don't have to unbolt the spindle at all. Just remove the pulley on top and the shaft with blade attached will slide out the bottom. The botton bearing, however, will be on the shaft and is difficult to get off. I use a bearing splitter to get it down far enough to drive off the shaft.

SOURCE: remove pulley on mower deck spindle

These are generally held on with just one large nut, I recommend you use a impact wrench otherwise it mau prove difficult ( you wont be able to hold the spindle tight enough) and certainly you will need a impact wrench to reassemble the spindle

SOURCE: Craftsman 42in mower deck spindle breaks and Strips.

there are thousands of these mowers out there, and most people do not have the problem that you are experiencing - let's face reality, you are hitting something, that's the only way these break - it is impractical to make a machine that will mow through rocks, stumps, and water pipes and not break - also, sears does not MAKE anything, they contract companies to make products for them - if you want a thicker, tougher mandrel housing, log onto www.amcpartsstore.com. they recently began offering a heavy duty version of the mandrel housing, part no. 130794. i've seen these and they are definitely beefy - just be sure to put everything together correctly and tighten all the nuts and bolts firmly, and try to avoid the rocks and stumps

Toro 52" need a spindle shaft for the deck, part no.78-6710 hard to find & very expensive, maybe there is some used ones around the countryside in Oz on a retired mower deck?

there is three on ebay by your part number. Toro Wheel Horse Mower Spindle Shaft 78 6710 $54 is about average for this type of repair. But if yours is straight and just wore at the bearing area you can JB Weld it back to size .

I have a Toro model number 20622 auto start go forward and backward the blade won't turn it's like it's got a break on it how do I get this to work when I pulled the lever nothing happens

Anon, a lot of these Toro decks do have a type of brake on one of the idler arm and pulley to stop blade. You will have to get a repair/service manual if your owners manual does not show it. Normally can be seen in deck belt installation diagram. If blade brake checks out OK, it is possible one or both blade spindles bearings are seizing.

One side of mower wont turn

Your spindle may be seized. try turning the side by hand. Try moving it back and forth. If there is movement then your bearing in your spindle is bad. I f no movement than check under your deck to make sure nothing is stuck holding the blade from turning. You will probably have to replace your belt as well

Toro 50" time cutter when engaging blade loud

I would remove the deck and belt, then spin each blade to isolate the loud noise. Also, make sure the blades are not bent hitting the deck. I always balance my blades after sharpening as well. By isolating the bearings spinning them one at a time, this will tell you where your problem lies. Hope this helps!

My 42 inch Toro seems to be cutting unevenly. The blades seem to be on correctly and I hope I haven't hit something to set the angle wrong

First thing to check is that the deck is level by the adjustments on wheels. Then check the bearings in the spindle housings and there is no play in the shaft when you try to move blade up and down. You then can measure from the blade tip bottom of deck on both sides (3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, and then 12 o'clock and 6'o clock They should all be the same. If not then either the shaft is bent, or the deck is bent slightly causing the blade not being parallel to the deck. If you have someone rotate the shaft you should be able to tell if the shaft is bent or not. If the deck is bent, then you will have to straighten it out till the spindle shaft is perpendicular to deck.

Mower deck spindle replacement

first take the blade off the spindle, then take the belt off the top, now there should be a nut on the top of the spindle you will have to remove that nut once you get that one off the pully will come off the spindle, now you will have to remove the bolts holding the spindle housing to the deck, put the spindle housing in a vise, put the nut back on the top of the spindle so that if you mass the threads with the hammer you are going to hit it with them you can fix them with the nut by taking it off again... now you have the nut on the top of the spindle and its in the vise, now hit the spindle to knock the bearing out of the bottum once you push the bearing out, you can remove the spindle out the bottum, now flip the housing over and take a punch and push the other bearing out if you are going to replace the bearings when replacing the spindle, i would reconend it... if you need anything else just xomment and ill repost...
good luck
