I live in austin, texas and nobody - not the city, not the manufacturer, not the landfill companies - seems to know how to dispose of these safely, or indeed whether they can be disposed of safely. hazardous waste won't even take it. they seem like a common product but their safe disposal is an area of almost universal ignorance. they are a sealed unit and cannot be emptied without rupturing or piercing the body. does anyone have any answers.

The Unit can be dismantled. Take off the controls and housing and there is a heating element that looks identical to the heating element on my electric water heater. It screws off with a large nut and the heating element comes out...and exposes the interior of the unit which probably has about a half gallon of Oil. Make sure the unit is turned so the oil doesn't leak out. Drain the Oil and recycle the steel radiator. I'm not sure what kind of oil it is but many automotive places will recyle auto oil. I've been looking into this.
