This could be due to a faulty speaker relay (if your unit uses one). Normally, the unit will "wait" a couple of seconds after you turn the unit on. Then you will hear a "click" and the sound will begin coming through the speakers. If the relay is faulty, it would cause the problem you describe.

Thanks for your concern. I was badly in need of a manual and luckily enough I got across a friend who had one in Uganda. So that solved my problem.

T-85L is a component of a hifi system not suposed to work alone. You have to connect it to another Kenwood component (an amplifier like the A85 ) through a special cable to power it on/off. The special cable can be used point to point or as daisy-chained.
