The fans are there to cool the engine but once you stop the car the temperature is not being cooled by movement of air and water circulation via the water pump so the fan cuts in for a short time to stop the temperatures causing damage. when driving the air cools the motor enough to keep it a t the right temp no air movement no cooling.

SOURCE: blower fan just stopped on my 1998 jeep cherokee

Fan relay is a good one for that and where I would start. Usually the cheapest to. But the next thing could be the fan switch.

SOURCE: radiator fan motor on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I hope that you haven't went out and bought a whole new assembly due to the other poster's response. Yes you can just replace the motor otherwise why would you be able to buy the motors separately. There's usually 3 bolts that hold the fan shroud in that you have to remove along with the electrical plug. It takes some manipulation to get the entire fan/shroud assembly out (it helps to have someone underneath the vehicle guiding it) but once out you will see a clip over the top of the fan. It's kind of a challenge to get off but using a hammer and a flat head screwdriver you can work it off. Be aware that you have to put the clip back on so don't pry it off and ruin it....just kind of chisel it off. Once off, the fan blade comes off with a little effort. There's your exposed motor. Take off the 3 bolts and pull out the wires and replace it with your new motor. I hope this helps others....I couldn't find this information anywhere and figured it out along the way.

Cooling fan will not turn on

Does it overheat? Which engine does your jeep have? If it has the 4.0, then it has an electrical cooling fan and the control relay most of the times fries. Its hidden under the bumper cover under the right hand headlight (seen from drivers position). Many time this relay fries due to the fan which is drawing too much current.
If your jeep has the 4.7, then it has a hydraulic cooling fan. That fan always idles (300 rpm) when the engine runs and will ramp up when the engine temperature gets too high. There is a control solenoid for this fan, but when its bad, then you should have the check engine light. Check for fault codes using the key dance: ignition switch off/run three times and leave in run at the third time. The odometer will show "DONE" when all ok, or any fault code(s).

2004 jeep grand cherokee engine cooling fan runs slow

Could be either one, but usually its the fan motor.
You can run a wire direct from the battery to bypass the relay to see how fast the fan is able to run. The connector on the fan relay can become damaged too.

Sounds like your fan relay is stuck. Look in the engine area for your fuse box, there will be a list for the relays inside. Try pulling the one for the fan. Fans are powered all the time not just ignition on

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee After disconecting the battery for recharging and reconnecting the battery the blower motor runs continuously. Went through the ATC diagnostics illustrated in the Haynes man. and...

Switch ,relay resistors or motor is shorted to ground.
Start with the switch and remove each one until it stops . test the item and it will probably be the culprit. Now remember most vehicles while running will have blower motor run at a low speed all the time.
The only time this should not happen is when the ignition is off.

03 grand cherokee, 4.0, rad fan will not run, checked fuses and replaced relay under headlight

Check the coolant temperature switch. You should have 12V on one side of the switch. If you jumper the two wires in the switch connector, your radiator fan should run with the ignition switch on. If it runs, replace the coolant temperature switch.
